Did it's job October 3, 2009 M. A Holzapfel (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First let me say I don't profess to know much about metal detecting. I bought this metal detector to find my wedding ring, which flew off my finger the other night while I was playing volleyball in the backyard with the kids (it was a chilly night and the ring was loose on my finger.) After an hour of searching, I figured it was worth it to buy an inexpensive metal detector in hopes of finding my ring.
I ordered it on Wednesday, it arrived on Friday (2 day shipping for $3.99 with prime.) I put the batteries in, read through the well-written booklet and did the tests it suggested. We had no problems finding the test objects (penny, quarter, nail) so I started "sweeping" the area where I thought it might be. I found it within 15 minutes. Granted, it wasn't buried in the ground or anything, but we did have several other "hits" that were definitely objects in the ground - strong signals but we just didn't take the time to dig since I knew my ring was buried in grass, not dirt. The kids can't wait for their turn now that the ring has been found. I think they will get some fun use out of it and they want to dig on our other "hits" from tonight.
The pros for this item were the fast shipping, easy to use right out of the box (just had to insert 2 9V batteries), well-written instructions, and it is Made in the USA. It felt sturdy and well-made but it was short in length (it is a Jr. size, after all) - didn't matter for my use but an adult wanting to do some serious detecting would want a longer one. The length feels just right for my children (ages 11, 8 and 5) and it is not too heavy, either. It is very simplistic - two dials (one for power/sensitivity and one for target elimination - like for ruling out iron or other metals if you are getting too much junk in your detecting) and one needle gauge called the "Target Indicator". It made a buzz/beep sound that was easy to hear. One thing - I do not see nor did I read about where you can plug any earphones in - which is a feature other detectors have.
If you have a specific need (like finding a lost ring!) or if your children want to try their hand at metal detecting, this seems like a great product.
Does not work at the beach August 17, 2009 Allie's mom (Louisiana) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was very disappointed with this product. I purchased it for my daughter to use at the beach. It did not work at all. I even placed my own quarter in the sand and it would only detect it if it was sitting right on top. It would not pick it up if a tiny bit of sand was on top of it. My brother in law had the same metal detector for his son and they had the exact same results as we did. It was a big let down. We used it in the backyard and found nails. Not very exciting!
Outstanding Metal Detector for Beginners August 7, 2009 M. Kuffler (Hartford, CT USA) I bought this for my daughter and she loved it. While I can't say she found treasure on the beach, the unit works exactly as advertised. It is well made and designed very well for children.
Make no mistake though, this requires some interaction with adults. I'd recommend looking at a website or book first on how to do metal detection properly. Spend some time with your kid before or after making this purchase and study how it needs to get used.
One more thing; this does require two 9 volt batteries. Make sure you purchase them (especially if this is a gift) with your purchase from Amazon. Much easier then getting them at the beach!
A pleasant surprise at a great price! July 24, 2009 Barb Justbarb Short on cash, yet wanting so much to try treasure hunting, I begrudging bought one marketed for kids or "small women". It was my first and I figured what have I got to lose. The jokes on me `cause I sold it (at quite a loss due to bad listing) after paying big bucks for one with all the bells & whistles. After struggling with the grown up one, I wish I had the little guy back.
It packs away in less the 2 feet, weights less than 2 pounds, and is so handy to pull out and check a fruitful looking area simply and accurately. Whether you're new at the game or an ol' timer, it's good to have one of these. Easy to travel with, it will tell you a lot before you need the big guns, which is a barging at any price. In addition, without all the electronic gadgetry that tells you close to the same things, the batteries last much longer. The only drawback was the coil isn't interchangeable. That's it.
