The Hurriquake's cutting edge design makes a stronger nail that can stand up to Mother Nature.

Every now and then a special product comes along and turns the construction market on its head. The Bostitch Hurriquake? Nail, designed to withstand the most prolific hurricanes and violent earthquakes, is one of those products. Not all nails are created equal, and many are simply not tough enough to do battle with Mother Nature when She really brings it on. Welcome to the next generation of nails.

Hurriquake Basics
When Bostitch set out to develop the world’s most advanced sheathing nail, he focused on enhancing the head and the shaft. What he came up with won Popular Science's 2006 Innovation of the Year honor.

The Head
The Hurriquake’s head is 25% larger than traditional sheathing nails. Why? Hurricane force winds create a powerful vacuum-like phenomenon called uplift that often rips standard nail heads through roof sheathing. The typical result after a big storm is an insurance and construction disaster: hundreds of houses without roofs, and many without walls, too. Thanks to the enlarged head, Hurriquake nails can withstand uplift forces of a whopping 271 pounds per square foot, substantially more than other nails. The head also has two other features worth mentioning. First, every head is marked for identification during code inspection (HQ1 or HQ2, depending on which thickness you’re using). This should save contractors a lot of hassle. Second, the patented design prevents you from driving nails in too deep. The benefit of this is significantly less counter-sinking and pulling through in bad conditions.

Shank Design
Discussions of nail shaft design don’t normally excite, but the Hurriquake’s shank is such a departure from the norm that it deserves a serious look. Typical nails are smooth near the bottom, and consequently they pull out when under stress. Hurriquake nails, on the other hand, feature a special ring geometry that grabs hold of the wood when pulled. Hurriquake nails are rated to hold in gusts up to 170 mph. and are strong enough to outperform Miami-Dade County’s code. Regular nails also have a series of parallel rings on the upper part of the shank. Unfortunately, these rings create voids (or spaces) in the sheathing they’re meant to hold in place, making the nails prone to losing their hold or breaking in hairy conditions. By contrast, the Hurriquake’s shaft actually fills voids in sheathing, thereby increasing hold strength.

Earthquakes
Hurricanes have gotten the lion’s share of media attention recently, but it shouldn’t be overlooked that the Hurriquake is also designed to minimize structural damage wrought by earthquakes. After a major earthquake, it’s common for structures to lean or droop. That’s because earthquakes put a huge amount of stress at an angle perpendicular to the nail, a phenomenon known as shear load. When the load becomes too much for the nails to bear, they bend or snap and the structure fails. With Hurriquake nails, the chances of this happening are minimal. Hurriquake’s "ring shank" stops halfway up to leave the middle of the nail, which takes the biggest beating during an earthquake, at its maximum thickness. This additional strength offers up to 50% more resistance to earthquakes forces.

3 out of 5 stars Nails great - Amazon Packaging Sucks   August 2, 2008

I Absolutely love the nails - Rings on bottom really grip fiberous wood (i.e. 2 x 4-6-8) while the spiral at the top grips the Sheathing ( OSB or Plywood.)
I am a mechanical Engineer and have worked as a packaging engineer. Problem is that Amazon is using the Bostitch box to send the Nails UPS / FedEx etc, something it was never designed for. Box is perfect for being stacked on a pallet and shipped to a home improvement store, but it can't take the rough automated handling of a major shipper. Problem is nails come COLLATED on plastic strips that are designed to break when being shot from the nail gun. Result is that when the box gets bumped around and crushes (in my case 1" dent in one corner) all the nail STRIPS in that corner get broken into individual pieces which don't load into my F21PL gun. Amazon has not clued in that these "nails" are fragile. If Amazon is going to sell them by the box, then they need to ship them inside another box with a good 2+" or styrofoam around them.
A note to the people at Bostitch if you are reading. Please add large print to your box saying " this box is not intened for shipment by UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL or other courier. Or if you want to sell to Amazon, create a custom shipable box for them.
In Summary - Nails great - Packaging for UPS etc courier shipment sucks.

1 out of 5 stars The nails sold here are bright finish which means no corrosion protection   April 7, 2008
B. STARK (Palm Bay, FL USA)
Just be careful, the PN here matches Bostitch site for these however all the pictures are incorrect. All of them show these nails coated as either zinc or galvanized finished and they are not, the box says bright finish. I have them rusting in the box after a week on my covered patio. I've shot a few hundred of these and they shoot fine and seems strong but I'm using them in Florida and they will surely rust out in record time and as such they probably are not even up to code for here. So unless you live somewhere dry and cold find a galvanized nail. Great price but not when you have to buy twice (a galvanized replacement). Anyone want to buy 4000 nails? Looks like I have a few hundred nails to re-shoot.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best design....   March 26, 2008
Kaiser Soze (MS, USA)
I have ever seen for a sheathing nail. While I live in hurricane alley and this product was a non-brainer because of that, I cant see why almost anyone building a new home wouldnt consider these for their significantly higher holding power given a relatively small premium in price to standard alternatives.

Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars nails have bending problem in our application   August 23, 2007
Matt (Belmont, CA USA)
After reading the data on these nails, I purchased a box of the .131 and requested that our builder use them to attach structural 1 OSB to studs. This is a retrofit project so the studs are dry (50yrs dry) In the field, they report that the nails are bending. They are not penetrating the OSB properly or the studs are too dry. Since here in CA we are concerned with shear not hurricane pressure, we switched to 10d instead. Shipping was nearly as much as the product.

1 out of 5 stars Repackaged Nails   April 19, 2007

I am a Florida builder and I purchased both the .113 and the .131 hurriquake nails. One order has been shipped back because the stick nails were obviously factory seconds (ie: many of the "sticks" were not complete...just bits and pieces.) The second order arrived in a damaged Bostich box that had been taped up and a sticker on the box stated "Recieved possibly damaged". Again, the nails appeared to have arrived from some warehouse that threw the nails into a box...taped it up and shipped it out. There were also a number of nails thrown in the box that were not complete "sticks" just bits and pieces. I will not be buying from this source again.
