Product Description High-Security Mechanical Locks comprehensively surveys and explains the highly technical area of high security locks in a way that is accessible to a wide audience. Well over 100 different locks are presented, organized into 6 basic types. Each chapter introduces the necessary concepts in a historical perspective and further categorizes the locks. This is followed by detailed "how it works" descriptions with many pictures, diagrams and references. The descriptions are based on actual dissections of the real locks.
The scope is limited to key operated mechanical locks, thus keyless combination locks and digital locks are not covered. The book does not deal with routine locksmithing topics such as installation and servicing of locks. The sensitive area of picking and bypassing of locks is dealt with only at a high level without giving detailed information that would be unacceptable in the wrong hands.
* Comprehensive coverage of over 100 different types of 19th and 20th century key-operated locks, unified in a simple classification scheme * Detailed operating principles - clear "how it works" descriptions * Manipulation resistance rating for each lock on a scale of 1 to 5

An Excellent Reference Tool May 17, 2008 Nathan Schlossman (Burbank, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Soon after High-Security Mechanical Locks: An Encyclopedic Reference was published, I purchased a copy as a reference tool since I am a high security lock collector. I consider the book to be an essential reference manual for high security locks insofar as it is comprehensive and detailed. The book fully explains the workings and components of high security locks. The explanations are in-depth and very understandable. The author has assigned a security rating (from 1 to 5 with 5 being the most secure) to each lock. I found this security rating to be very helpful and accurate in terms of the pick resistance of locks. The photographs in the book are outstanding and exceedingly informative. Having the book affords me the opportunity to learn more about high security locks from around the world that are extremely difficult to obtain and it assists me in expanding my lock collection and knowledge on the subject. Assembling such a vast array of information and photographs in one place concerning high security locks is quite an accomplishment. Other books concerning this topic have primarily discussed how to theoretically pick/defeat high security locks but have not delved into how such locks operate. Finally, there is a book available that offers comprehensive information on the inner workings and details of high security locks. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to all persons interested in high security locks.
A great source of information May 7, 2008 Michael H (Germany) I'm a lock collector, I like to understand how they work. This book is great - very accurate and well written with sufficient details on nearly all interesting keyed locks that are out there. The author is very knowledgeable and has put a lot of effort into all the details. A must have for a serious collector.

This is one of those books that is destined to be a highly prized possession of every locksmith, collector, and locksport enthusiast out there. Packed full of detailed descriptions and images, the author has provided a very detailed description of the workings of every major mechanical locking system around. Well worth the purchase and well worth the read!
Best book on High Security locks I have ever seen February 14, 2008 M. Kaye I have been a locksmith, lock collector and historian for 44 years and this is the best book on high security locks I have ever seen. It is hard bound and reads like a textbook. Photos and well-written explanations throughout. Covers locks from the 1800's through present day, from all over the world. I can't think of a lock or cylinder that was missed and everything is totally accurate. If you are interested in locks this book is a MUST HAVE.
