Keeps the cold out March 16, 2010 Eloise M. Stevens (Kendall, NY) When we remodeled our laundry room, a typical dryer vent was installed, and the walls were insulated against the fierce NW winds off Lake Ontario. The first time the temps went below zero, my washing machine pipes froze and I had to thaw them out by running my gas dryer for an hour and trickling water into the utility sink! When it happened a second time, I was totally frustrated. And, any time the wind blew, the flapper would make so much noise we couldn't sleep. We eventually put a plastic bag on the outside vent and I had to remember to remove it every time I used the dryer--which was dangerous, obviously, and a pain in the neck. Then I found this product online, ordered it and installed it. (We had to screw it into our vinyl siding.) This past winter was brutal and the pipes never froze, and the inside of my dryer remained room temperature instead of freezing. Plus, there's nothing to flap in the wind. I can say this product saved my pipes, my marriage, and perhaps my life.
Works better than expected! February 27, 2010 SLO (Loma Linda, CA) After reading the reviews I took a chance and bought one to see for myself. The installation didn't take as long as I thought it would. I had no problems at all. I spray painted it white with spray paint made for plastic. Before installation I did buy a tube of silicone caulking to ensure a tight seal on the interior as well as the exterior of the vent. My exterior is stucco, and I had no problems with any of the supplied hardware drilling into the exterior of the house. I even pre drilled some holes which really wasn't even necessary. After installation was complete, I squeezed a small bead of caulking around any possible gaps to make it air tight. It worked! I let the caulking set, then took off the top cap of the vent while my wife turned on the dryer inside. The round cap inside the vent flew up in the air and out of the vent. Obviously this meant I had a pretty good seal. The next morning I opened up our laundry room door and noticed a pretty big difference in temperature as compared to the ice box feeling we used to get when going into our laundry room. To us, it is worth the small amount of money to make our laundry room less drafty and so cold like it used to be. I don't know how some people have such a hard time installing something so basic, and complain about having to squeeze out a little caulking from a tube. Don't believe the negativity. if your laundry room is like ours was, buy it. It's not going to heat the room but will definitely help keep it warmer in the cold season and keep the bugs out. We're very happy with the purchase.
Dryer Vent February 19, 2010 Doger (FL) I have had this type of vent before in fact it is replacing one that I had. The original must have been 10 or more years old.
Keeps cold air out ! February 3, 2010 Kay (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I live in an old house and have a large laundryroom/"artist studio" that just wouldn't stay warm. I'd heat it, but half an hour later, it would be cold again. I had the walls, ceiling ,and floor insulated ,which helped ..but didn't solve the problem. My next expensive attempt at maintaining the heat was going to be installing double pane windows. At the time, my budget didn't allow for the new windows, so I opted for changing the dryer vent. What a difference it makes ! The room now stays toasty warm !
Vent Review January 30, 2010 P. Robertson (Red Lodge, MT) I ordered one of these to replace the one that had been in place for nine years. It is exactly the same and works well. The problem is that the UV from the sun degrades them over time. It is the best dryer vent I have seen as it is designed to let warm air and moisture out and keep outside cold air from coming into the house. It functions quietly and makes no noise when the wind is blowing.
