Amazon.com At the time of its original release in 1984, this modestly budgeted sci-fi excursion had the distinction of offering some of the first examples of purely computer-generated animation, an apt (and frugal) special-effects solution for a movie with a plot line rooted in computer games. Both the computer-generated visuals and the arcade game now look quaint, but writer-director Nick Castle's affable, good- hearted adventure holds up nicely, thanks to a clever premise--the title game is actually a test for prospective starship pilots, planted by embattled aliens under siege from an evil invader. When a restless teenager (Lance Guest) racks up an impressive score, he finds himself spirited away to the besieged planet and thrust into the midst of an intergalactic war. Apart from Castle's skill at contrasting his extraterrestrial settings with the mundane details of his hero's earthbound life, the movie gets lift-off from two thorough pros, Robert Preston, who makes the alien recruiter, Centauri, a planet-hopping cousin to The Music Man's Harold Hill, and Dan O'Herlihy, the alien copilot, who suggests a scaly Walter Brennan. Older fans will snicker, but kids and young teens will find this rite of passage absorbing, while their folks will savor Preston's brash charm. --Sam Sutherland

Still great after 20 years November 14, 2009 Carolyn N. Hill (Melbourne, Australia) I had this movie on VHS for years and years and it was one of those films that I just never got sick of. And then when dvd's came out, I eventually threw it away thinking 'I'll go and get it on dvd now'... and off course it hadn't been released on dvd. So this was a great find for me - and is still just as enjoyable today as it was 20 odd years ago. A great movie, a great adventure, fabulous for the kids and the special effects were cutting edge at the time and still hold up today. The special features on this special edition are fanastic too - educational as well as interesting.
10 out of 10 from me!
The Last Star Fighter - 2th Anniversary edition October 10, 2009 Mark T. Von Seggern (Denver, CO USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Movie itself was exactly the same as the original - your probably saying well duh. I was expecting to see Will Wheaton in this version, but to no avail. I was kind of expecting to see some deleted scenes restored to no avail. All that was there was how the movie was made in 3 or 4 different ways. Not what I was looking for. But still a nice addition to my movie collection.
Great 80's era movie! October 5, 2009 Andrew F (Seattle, WA) Watching this movie is great, if for no other reason to remember back when analog 15" CRT monitors and 400 baud modems were considered cutting edge.
Movies like this and Wargames also remind me how, even as recently as the 80s, you can have a fun movie that didn't involve hyper-sexualized teens dressed like Megan Fox in Transformers. Rather, you have a plot driven movie that played on the kind of innocent wonder back in the day about how technology would change people's lives and lead to a new future.
The CGI used in the film looks exceedingly dated, but I remember when this film and Tron came out, I thought it was cool as heck. Admittedly, some parts of the movie are a bit cheesy, but if you can ignore that this movie is a great example of an 80's sci fi classic.
Needs a sequel! September 27, 2009 DJ Max (northern CAL, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Good to see they made a 25th Anniversary edition of this! I enjoy watching this time and time again! Everyone has their own favorite movie that they can watch over and over-this one is one of many I have that is FUN to watch like that! They need a SEQUEL!
