Product Description The stuff is a mysterious new taste sensation thats taken the country by storm. But when it begins to outsell even ice cream a coalition of food moguls hire an industrial saboteur to uncover the snacks secret formula. Together with an embittered cookie entrepreneur they discover the horrifying truth. Studio: Starz/sphe Release Date: 01/06/2004 Starring: Michael Moriarty Danny Aiello Run time: 86 minutes Rating: R Director: Larry Cohen
Amazon.com B movie maverick Larry Cohen always enjoyed slipping a little social commentary into his genre pictures, and the satirical sci-fi/horror comedy The Stuff is no exception. A mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Blob, The Stuff is an insidiously addictive, low-calorie dessert sensation that soon wins the hearts and minds of the nation, but mostly the minds. You see, to borrow a title from another Cohen classic, it's alive. Michael Moriarty is an industrial spy with questionable ethics and a certain moral flexibility behind his disarming drawl. "No one is as dumb as I appear to be," he informs his newest client, a snack food CEO who wants the secret of The Stuff. Needless to say he becomes the film's hero, a smart-talking everyman battling a compromised FDA and a corporate baddie who sees dollar signs in every Stuff snarfing zombie he converts. Cohen's satirical swipes at consumerism, advertising, and the ethics of corporate profit come fast and furious, if not exactly focused, and help drive the film past his--at times--sloppy direction. Moriarty's energetic performance is hilarious, and his rag-tag crew includes Andrea Marcovicci as an advertising wunderkind (who improbably falls in love with Moriarty), Saturday Night Live alum Garrett Morris as "Famous Amos" parody "Chocolate Chip Charlie," and Paul Sorvino as a commie-hating, conspiracy-spewing militia leader. The DVD features commentary by Larry Cohen along with trailers and detailed biographies. --Sean Axmaker

"Are you eating it, or is it eating you?" November 6, 2009 M. Ryan Fairbanks (Cleveland, Ohio) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Larry Cohen blends gross out gore with dark humor to make the delectable B-movie treat "The Stuff". Just think Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets The Blob, only the resulting movie wouldn't be quite as awesome as you'd imagine.
When some miner's find an unidentified white substance oozing out of the ground, they do what anyone would do and taste it, only to find that it's delicious! Now the goo, aptly titled "The Stuff", is being marketed all across America and has taken the title of the country's most popular dessert. The ice cream industry has decided to send in "Mo", a saboteur who intends to find the truth about what "the stuff" is and where it comes from. Along with some help, he discovers that "the stuff" is a living alien organism that turns the consumers into zombies.
The Stuff has a little bit of everything. Good gory sequences, likable characters, and some mildly amusing humor. It also parodies consumerism and advertising for those interested in a horror movie with a little wit behind the gory exterior. Sure it isn't the most superbly crafted movie ever, but it delivers what B-movie and horror lovers want in spades. The Stuff is worth the time, check this one out.
Not every bad film is a cult classic November 4, 2009 Canny Scotsman (MA) Sometimes a bad film is just that, a bad film.
Moriarty is a great actor, when he wants, and "Q" is a much better showcase for his many talents.
Maybe "The Stuff" had a good premise, but it fails in the execution. It looks allover as if it were made quickly and on the cheap.
The good reviews come from folk who, IMO, are using their own power of imagination to fill in the cracks in the storyline and acting. This is not a put down - most of the positive folks are seeing what should/could have been, rather than what it is.
Wait until the price goes down, if you must have it.
My recommendation is: Rent, don't buy this Z movie.
Just Stuff September 5, 2009 D. Ortiz (Houston,Tx) If you want to see some famous actors in their early careers then this movie has them. You will recognize a few of the cast in this great example of comical sci-fi at its best. For me its a well written and staged flick that makes you want to enjoy a bowl of popcorn and a side of yogurt.
The "RIGHT" Stuff!!!!!!!!!!!Yummy August 20, 2009 Susan A. Richardson (Oakland, CA) What a delicious satirical gem of a movie! It really sends up American Capitalism and consumerism and is a commentary on greed and gluttony using outrageous dark humor. Science Fiction has always been a genre for satirical comedy on society's foibles and this vintage movie is no exception.......the premise being the national marketing of some white gooey "STUFF" that bubbles up from the earth and is the perfect product......sweet, addictive and irresistble...until people realize that while they are eating IT, it is eating THEM! A must-see for Sci Fi fans or anyone with a sense of humor.
A camp classic April 27, 2009 Walter (Maine) Larry Cohen's best film about a yogurt monster. Goofy and fun, never a dull moment.
