Amazon.com They just don't make musicals like this any more. There are some who would be grateful for that--the plot is but a flimsy excuse to string together song and dance numbers. Some of us, however, love big, splashy, overdone musical scenes, of which there are many. Glittering stage numbers showcase a commanding Barbra Streisand as Dolly Levy, a New York matchmaker who can find a mate for anyone. Anyone but herself, that is. Determined to marry wealthy Walter Matthau, she lures him out of Yonkers and sets about wooing him. Don't worry about the lack of a solid story or Gene Kelly's pedestrian direction. Watch instead for the musical numbers and the lavish costumes. Listen to Jerry Herman's score, and dance around the living room when a sequined Streisand arrives in a club as Louis Armstrong strikes up the title tune for her benefit. (Just pull the shades first.) Based on Thornton Wilder's play The Matchmaker, Hello, Dolly! won Academy Awards for best sound, art direction, and musical score. --Rochelle O'Gorman

How jaded we were in 1969 September 27, 2009 Deb (Philadelphia, PA United States) How jaded were we in 1969 not to embrace this spectacular film? It is visually appealing with enchanting music and dance. Streisand's voice never sounded better and Matthau was never funnier. How wonderful to have it available on dvd to view and enjoy!
Classic American musical, eye and ear candy, must see Young Barbra August 15, 2009 Ashley De Colmenares (Greenfield, MA, Maraciabo, Ven) I think this movie takes you into a time in America that's enchanting, exciting, and to anyone of my peers an amazing ideal system. My husband was not a fan of Barbra and now he is amazed how taken he was by this film. For such a small price anyone who loves musicals and time movies this will steal your heart. I guarantee you will be singing the songs for weeks after!
A joyful fun-filled musical! August 11, 2009 Carl Edward (Maryland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This classic musical has it all; extravagant costumes, excellent dialog, beautiful scenery, and profuse drama and some slapstick humor. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and experience all the wonder of the orginal movie.
Barbra Streisand At Her Prime! July 9, 2009 Anna C. Stevenson (Lake City, SC) It's been years since I saw "Hello dolly!" I must say it's even better now than when I viewed it as a pre-teen. The music is a mixture of toe tapping and "wanna-get-out-of-your-seat" and dance! Seeing Louis Armstrong perform with Barbra brought back fond memories. Barbra's performance as Dolly Levi is perfect! This movie is truly a classic worth watching over and over again.
OUTSTANDING June 21, 2009 Jan C. Garza-villarreal (BAKERSFIELD,CA) THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING MUSICAL MOVIE, GREAT DANCING, COSTUMES AND SCENERY. COULD WATCH THIS OVER AND OVER. WISH WE WERE MAKING THIS TYPE OF MOVIE TODAY!
