High emotion and plenty of butt-kicking saturate this finale of one of the best action series of all time. Hardcore nutball Xena fans have doubtless already seen this episode and will want to revisit it, but casual viewers may want to get up to speed with the Xenaverse before watching (or else they'll miss out on a few seasons' worth of emotional resonance). In their final adventure, Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (Renée O'Connor) travel to the Land of the Rising Sun to clear up a bit of Xena's dark past and defeat both personal and tangible demons. Their quest, packed with action sequences, of course focuses on Xena and Gabrielle's evolving relationship. Producer and series co-creator Rob Tapert directs, giving the show some eye-popping moments and a quick homage to his Evil Dead movies. The weighty finality of the show means that it's missing some of the series' trademark sense of humor, but some fun still sneaks in around the edges. Lawless and O'Connor give excellent performances, and Joseph LoDuca's music, as it should, sends us off. Whether or not you agree with the way the series ends, you'll want to own this one. --Ali Davis

3 out of 5 stars Superfluous, only purchased BECAUSE OF AMAZON'S FLAWED & PREDATORY ITEM DESCRIPTIONS   November 5, 2009
Anntichrist S. Coulter (West Redneckistan, LA)
I only BOUGHT this video BECAUSE THOUGH IT ***APPEARS*** ON THE 10TH-ANNIVERSARY "FAN FAVE" BOXED SET, IT IS NOT ***LISTED***, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER EPISODES INCLUDED WITH THAT BOXED SET, *ON* THE AMAZON LISTING PAGE **FOR** THAT BOXED SET. HAD I KNOWN THAT "A Friend In Need" was IN THE BOXED SET, I'd never have purchased A DUPLICATE. So up yours very much, Amazon, for screwing me into buying EXTRANEOUS VIDEO.

Why list samples of HALF the episodes on a boxed set, IF YOU CAN'T TELL THE CUSTOMER ***EVERYTHING*** THAT'S IN THE BOXED SET??!??!?

Oh, right, 'cause y'all are AMAZON, and don't have to WORRY about "customer satisfaction" or "customer service" like A REAL BRICK-AND-MORTAR STORE WOULD HAVE, LIKE THE MILLIONS OF INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES THAT YOU HAVE HELPED THE BIG-BOX STORES TO DESTROY.

4 out of 5 stars My First Episode Of Xena!   March 24, 2008
Andrew Salmon (Vancouver, British Columbia Canada)
It may be a little backwards, but this was the first episode of Xena this reviewer has ever watched. I'd heard of the show but did not watch in its original run or in reruns. But I happened upon this DVD dirt cheap and decided it was time to see what all the excitement was about.

And I enjoyed it. I'd read about the controversial aspect of the ending and, before watching, thought it was a gutsy move by the film makers. Having the heroine of the show get butchered and stay dead at the end is not your typical happy ending to a series.

The final episodes were great! Campy, goofy, dramatic, kind of dumb, yet, thoroughly entertaining. Lucy Lawless is an irresistible screen presence and deserves most of the credit for the entertainment quality of what I've seen so far.

I've since picked up Season Two and am looking forward to watching it. It may be a strange way to get into a series, starting at the end, but it worked for me. I don't recommend it. But I do recommend the show. Very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars They don't make shows like this anymore   January 21, 2008
D. Betz (NY)
I thought there could be several improvements on the season finale like when going back to memories have older episodes: Xena was sick and Gabrielle had to dress up like Xena and the breast plate fell off(The Greater Good) and when Gabrielle was sick and Gabrielle looked at Xena and said "I want so much to be like you."
Xena: "And I want to be like you." also when Xena says "But you're my source, Gabrielle. When I reach down and do more than I'm capable of, it's because of you. Don't you know that by now?" (One Against an Army) etc....

This series had everything in it: Comedy, drama, inspiration, musicals, etc... I also believe this was a series that helped create certain television shows and movies. Watch (Here She Comes... Miss Amphipolis 1997) and tell me that's not similar to (Miss. Congeniality 2000). Remember that Xena was being played in a different time period (Historical Times) and Miss. Congeniality is being played in the present, yet they are still similar. The show not only had a few good laughs with the help of Joxer (Ted Rami)but also allows viewer the feeling of Catharsis. Seeing Xena battle her past demons and realizing she wouldn't be the hero she is without her past is PRICELESS. Also watching the growth of Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle's (Renee O Conner) friendship is something very special. They become family and travel to the exotic lands of Asia and to the beautiful landscape of Egypt etc...

The DVDS are worth it I own all 6 seasons and the commentaries are GREAT. I especially love watching Hudson Leick's (Callisto)commentary she's intelligent, funny, and beautiful.

P.S. My one note would be buy the director's cut of The Final Episode (A Friend In Need) because it's much better. Plus you get great extras including commentary by Lucy, Renee, and Rob and you also get behind the scene footage including a little B-Day cake for Lucy. The commentary is great I just finished watching it again for my 100th time because I find Lucy and Renee hysterical.

I will always have faith that a Xena Movie will be made, although Gabrielle lost faith in her Hope; I will always have faith that Xena will eventually become a movie; plus I'm only 19 so I still have plenty of years left to wait lol.

Well Thank you Lucy, Renee, Rob, Hudson, Ted, Bruce, Kevin and all the other people that made Xena possible. You filled many homes with joy, laughter, and inspiration; it truly is one of televisions greatest moments!

5 out of 5 stars Thank You for making my Daughter's Christmas Wish!   December 27, 2007
Marailyn A. Williams
I was disappointed with this same purchase on another web site - it wasn't what I ordered and arrived in awful condition. Because I knew my Daughter really wanted this dvd for Christmas, I turned to you as I have in the past, and again I was extremely pleased! The product arrived quickly and in excellent condition, not to mention the fantastic value! Keep up the good work - you have a solid patron!

2 out of 5 stars What a terrible ending!   July 21, 2007
M. Palage Jr. (Troy, NY, USA)

I have been and still am a loyal fan of Xena and Gabrielle. Let me remind those who liked the ending of something. Real Life is full of saddness, misery, loss and tragedy. We watch TV and movies to escape reality. Xena was a tragic figure in the beginning of her life. She killed for little or no reason. But she saw that she was wrong. She changed her ways and fought for justice. There is no way to bring those killed back to life. But Xena repented and devoted her life to fight for good. She risked her life many times in order to save the lives of countless others. (Let those without sin throw the first stone) We need a heroine like Xena. We want to see that those in the "white hats" win and the bad guys in the "black hats" lose. I know that reality does not work out that way many times. But Xena was different. She is special. I think it is most digusting, very tragic and pathetic that Xena had to die. And if dying wasn't enough, beheading her made my stomach turn. I own the entire series. But I will never, ever watch the last episode again.
I gave this two stars because Xena's tragic and unnecessary death puts a blemish on the whole series.
