Amazon.com With a tantalizing "what-if?" scenario and a respectable cast of Hollywood veterans, The Final Countdown plays like a grand-scale episode of The Twilight Zone. It's really no more than that, and time-travel movies have grown far more sophisticated since this popular 1980 release, but there's still some life remaining in the movie's basic premise: What if a modern-era Navy aircraft carrier--in this case the real-life nuclear-powered U.S.S. Nimitz--was caught in an anomalous storm and thrust 40 years backwards in time to the eve of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor? Will the ship's commander (Kirk Douglas) interfere with history? Will the visiting systems analyst (Martin Sheen) convince him not to? Will a rescued senator from 1941 (Charles Durning) play an unexpected role in the future of American politics? Veteran TV director Don Taylor doesn't do much with the ideas posed by this potentially intriguing plot; he seems more interested in satisfying aviation buffs with loving footage of F-14 "Jolly Roger" fighter jets, made possible by the Navy's generous cooperation. That makes The Final Countdown a better Navy film than a full-fledged time-travel fantasy, but there's a nice little twist at the end, and the plot holes are easy to ignore. James Cameron would've done it better, but this popcorn thriller makes an enjoyable double-bill with The Philadelphia Experiment. --Jeff Shannon

Great SciFi November 16, 2009 Richard Franks (Arcadia, Calif) A modern aircraft carrier is somehow transported back to December 7, 1941, the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Very well done film. A family oriented film.
Time warp November 14, 2009 Ali'i Kealoha (Hawaii) This is a very interesting film and it deals with time travel. Imagine this..you're on one of the most powerful aircraft carriers of present day and you get whooshed back in time to just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. I won't spoil it for future viewers, I'll just say I really enjoyed it! Kirk Douglas and Michael Sheen are excellent and add their own quirks to the film.
A must see. What would you do??
Great Sci Fi October 31, 2009 Vivian Rambusek This has traditionally been on of my favorites. An older film this boasts a very good cast and a what if scenario, if history could be changed. If you like military films and Sci Fi you may well enjoy this film.

The Final Countdown has always been one of my favourite what if movies.
I purchased it on Blue Ray and was surprised at how well it turned out. Most of the time when they take an older movie like this and put them on BR and you watch them on a large screen TV 50 inches or better it is still like watching a VHS tape on a big screen. The BR Copy I bought was like a VHS upgrade to DVD. By no means as clear as BR should be but much much better than I expected to get.
Hats off to the remastering team that did the work on these disks. BR and DVD.
Lastly. Would it not be cool for a good director and production team to remake this movie. And not ruin it with PC garbage or turning it in to a global warming commercial, or turning it in to a liberal anti war propaganda reel.
Wouldn't it be cool if it was done right with today's effects?

This movie has always been a favorite of mine. The special effects were good enough for the time and still do not take away from a very entertaining movie. The Blu-ray clarity has added a wonderful aspect to all the flight operations. This movie was made the cooperation of the Navy and everything is actual footage and not computer generated. The F-14s and the Confererate Air Force Zeros performed amazing maneuvers together. The cast is first rate and made the movie work. As an added enjoyment, watch the interviews with the "Jolly Rogers". Naval Aviators always have something fun to say and don't worry about being politically correct.
