4 out of 5 stars Volume 15 - The Women and Children of the Old West   August 28, 2005

This review refers to "The Great American Western - Volume 15" (Platinum Disc Co).

Platinum Disc has put together a series of packages for the true Western lover. There are dozens of these discs available. There are 4 films on each disc and there are several package deals with 5 to 10 discs per package. It may get a little confusing as the multi-package deals are also called Volumes 1 2, etc. The earlier single volumes(1,2,3 etc) seem to include films all featuring a single actor. The single Vol 1 for example has Randolph Scott in all four films(see my review of this volume if you are interested). The later volumes (11, 12, 13, etc),include a variety of stars, and seem to have a theme to them. If you are like me and just can't get enough of these old west stories, buying them in the ten pack is the most economical way to go and sometimes the outside sellers have some terrific deals. So far as I could tell, there are 2 volumes(Vol 1 and 2) of the 10 packs with single volumes 1-10 in one pack and 11-20 in another, but new packages are coming out all the time. I have reviewed the ten pack Vol 2 and listed all 40 films included if you are interested in going that way. Each single volume in the multi-packs come in their own individual keep case by the way and all the films are enhanced in Dol Dig 5.1. So to find what you are looking for, enter "Great American Western" and the volume number in the search, or just browse through them. The only problem in browsing through them, may be that the indivudual films are not listed for each disc.(One of the reasons, I have been trying to review these disc by disc) If you enter Vol 2 you will get both the single disc and the multi-disc packages to choose from. You'll know from the price which is which.

The single Volume 15 contains 4 films that are dedicated to the women and children of the frontier. There are some great stars and moving stories.

First up from 1958, and this one is worth the price of admission, is "The Proud Rebel" Directed by Michael Curtiz, with an all star cast led by Alan Ladd and Olivia De Havilland, a father will do whatever it takes to get his son to a doctor. The boy has had a terrible shock and is not able to speak a word. It's a touching film and the cast also inlcudes greats, Dean Jagger and Cecil Kellaway.

"Wanted: The Sundance Woman"(1976)...I thought this was going to be a documentary, but it is a made for TV film that speculates of what became of Etta Place aftrer the demise of Butch and Sundance. This one stars Katherine Ross reprising her role as Etta, with a teriffic supporting cast, including Katherine Helmond, Stella Stevens, Michael Constatine, Steve Forrest as Charlie Siringo, the Detective determined to catch her and Hector Elizondo as Pancho Villa, who Etta works with transporting firearms. The story was good and seemed quite believeable.

"Pioneer Woman"(1973) finds a widowed homesteader(Joanna Pettet) following her husband's dreams to put down roots out west, but the trip there is frought with danger and difficulties, endangering the lives of herself and her children.
William Shatner and David Janssen also star, along with a very young Helen Hunt. A pretty good view.

"Seven Alone" (1975) is another story of survival against the odds, as the oldest of seven children tries to keep the family together during a journey along the Oregon Trail on which both of their parents have died. They get a little help from Kit Carson on their journey. This one seemed to move a little slow.

The films look pretty good for the most part, even "Proud Rebel" the oldest from 1958 had a nice clear picture. Don't expect though, a big studio transfer or restoration. Also "Wanted" The Sundance Woman" lost all sound during the last
10 or 15 minutes, this was disappointing. All 4 films are on the same side, and there is scene access for each individual film as well.

Check out the package deals as well. Oater lovers cannot go wrong for the price, although sometimes it can be a grab bag as to what films you will get. This Vol 15 is also sold as part of the 10 disc package of Great American Westerns Vol 2

Happy Trails...Laurie
