Amazon.com essential video This sumptuous 1949 film adaptation of the beloved Louisa May Alcott novel isn't as good as the 1933 Katharine Hepburn version, or even the 1994 remake starring an Oscar-nominated Winona Ryder, but it does offer its own pleasures, especially in seeing an all-star cast put through its paces. Erstwhile tomboy June Allyson stars as Alcott's famed heroine Jo, the budding writer in Civil War New England who pines for adventure, independence, and her own career. With Father off to war, it's up to Jo, practical older sister Meg (Janet Leigh), frail sister Beth (Margaret O'Brien), and vain sister Amy (Elizabeth Taylor) to help Marmee (a saintly Mary Astor) keep the home fires warm while dealing with the rigors of adolescence. It's all poured on with a generous amount of syrup, including lavish sets, hoop skirts, and petticoats, but anyone who's ever read Alcott's book will take comfort in its familiar story line. The dialogue is clunky but earnest, but you'd have to have a heart of stone not to get caught up in Jo's plight. And rarely do you get to see such stars go at it with such gusto: Allyson and Peter Lawford (as neighbor and rich boy Laurie) are a match made in B-movie heaven, Taylor is spunky and hilarious in an early comic performance, and Leigh does the matronly thing with aplomb. And nobody, but nobody, cries and suffers like Margaret O'Brien! Watch it in the wintertime, with a fire roaring. --Mark Englehart

I Have Not Received This DVD Yet November 18, 2009 Edna J. Cash (Madison, WI) I got an e-mail indicating that this product was shipped on October 17, 2009; but I have never received the DVD. I would still like to have it. I am perplexed that it has not arrived. This is the third time this has happened this year where I ordered something and was told it shipped, but I never received it. I am forced to give it the very lowest rating under the circumstances.
Wonderful old movie October 5, 2009 Can Can Girl (North Carolina) I am so happy that this movie is on DVD. For some reason, the colors seem more vivid than on VHS. I love this version--I prefer this one with Elizabeth Taylor to the one with Katherine Hepburn--I did not like the newest one with Winona Ryder, at all. If you are a fan of this movie or if you have never seen it, you will love this DVD.
Little Women September 11, 2009 Mrs. Michelle Gilroy (New South Wales, Australia) This dvd is a favourite of mine and now my daughter's as I have introduced the wonderful world of little women to her. She is 7 yrs old. For anyone who enjoys the love of family and the romance of young love, I would recommend this version of the movie Little Women.
Worst of the three Little Women movies I've seen... September 1, 2009 Joanna S. (AZ) First of all... the character Jo is supposed to be in her teens. June Allyson who plays Jo was in her 30's when they filmed this! My husband came in while I was watching it and asked me if she was Marmee! I didn't like her portrayal of Jo either- I think Katherine Hepburn and Winona Ryder did a much better job of showing Jo's sensitive side (b/c she did have one) along with her bold and tomboyish qualities. I never understood why Laurie loved her so in this picture- b/c you don't really see them interact that much. Also, again with the casting, the man (and I say man, not young man) who played Laurie looked much older than he is supposed to be. Beth also appears to be the baby in the family- she's even a good foot shorter than the other girls- when indeed Amy is the youngest. It was hard for me to get past the obvious age issues.
Then there was the script- first part of the movie stayed pretty true to the book. Then they crammed the second part into about 30 minutes! I felt like I was on a train ride, crashing into a wall as they skipped over big scenes and dialogue. All in all... definitely the lesser of the three Little Women movies. Even though the newest flick is also missing important scenes- I think the casting was much more well thought out as well as the character development.
Very good value for price August 5, 2009 bo peep (CA, USA) I am very satisfied with this VHS cassette purchase. The quality is very good compared to the price.
