5 out of 5 stars Judy! Judy! Judy!   July 11, 2009
Byron Kolln (the corner where Broadway meets Hollywood)
Seven all-time classic movies starring Judy Garland, one of the most talented individuals ever to walk this earth. This box-set will provide endless entertainment and also illustrate just how prolific and versatile Ms Garland was during her glory-days with MGM.

In chronological order -

LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY (1938):
When he needs to raise the extra $8 for his dream car, Andy (Mickey Rooney) agrees to take his friend's demanding, red-headed girlfriend Cynthia (Lana Turner) to the annual Christmas dance. Trouble is, he's more or less promised to take good ole Polly Benedict (Ann Rutherford) too! And when bright-eyed Betsy Booth (Judy Garland) starts swooning as well, poor Andy begins to wish that kissing had never been invented... Garland sings three numbers ("In-Between", "It Never Rains But What It Pours" and "Meet the Beat of My Heart").

THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939):
Judy Garland's starmaking movie. Young Kansas farmgirl Dorothy (Garland) is swept over the rainbow and into a land of fantasy and adventure which transforms into a quest to return home. Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr are Dorothy's faithful companions along the Yellow Brick Road, with Margaret Hamilton as the witchiest witch you'll ever encounter!

ZIEGFELD GIRL (1941):
MGM teamed Garland with two of their resident glamour girls (Lana Turner and Hedy Lamarr) for this sudsy semi-sequel to "The Great Ziegfeld". Judy plays a feisty born-in-a-trunk vaudevilian who aspires to Ziegfeld Follies stardom, but the picture is stolen by Ms Turner's aggressive performance as a showgirl whose own quest for Ziegfeld fame is squandered in favour of booze and pills.

FOR ME AND MY GAL (1942):
Well and truly grown up, Garland shines in a brittle backstage drama which introduced Gene Kelly to movie audiences and established the title song as an immortal classic that would forever remain a staple of Garland's concert repertoire. Gene Kelly and George Murphy compete for the affections of Garland in this wartime favourite.

THE HARVEY GIRLS (1946):
Reunited with her "Wizard of Oz" co-star Ray Bolger, THE HARVEY GIRLS was one of Garland's best films from the mid-40's. Also featuring a young Cyd Charisse and Angela Lansbury as a hard-boiled saloon dame, THE HARVEY GIRLS stars Garland as a reluctant mail-order bride who instead decides to become a waitress for the Harvey Restaurants. The film launched another beloved hit song ("On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe").

IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME (1949):
Veronica Fisher (Judy Garland) is the latest employee at the music shop run by Mr Oberkugen (the adorable S.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall), and right from the outset she ruffles the feathers of senior sales assistant Andrew Larkin (Van Johnson). Believing she's out to usurp his position in the store, Andrew decides to give her the cold shoulder. But unbeknowst to Andrew, Veronica is in fact his secret pen-pal. When he discovers her true identity, all manner of complications get in the way before Veronica learns the truth as well... This movie was filmed during one of Garland's most wretched personal periods, yet miraculously none of it appears on screen. Keep your eyes peeled for little Liza Minnelli's screen debut at the end of the film!

A STAR IS BORN (1954):
Judy Garland's star rose once more when she made this musical masterpiece, directed by George Cukor. Produced by her then-husband Sid Luft, this emotionally gripping film starred Garland as singer Esther Blodgett, whose screen success counterpoints with her husband Norman Maine's (James Mason) plunge into oblivion. Cut shortly after it's premiere, the deleted scenes were restored to the movie in the early 80's thanks to the efforts of film historian Ronald Haver. Judy's greatest hour on screen and her last big splash in Hollywood before concentrating her efforts almost exclusively on live performance.

4 out of 5 stars This boxed set has depreciated somewhat over time   September 26, 2007

This was a great set when it was first released in 2004 - seven of Judy's best films in one package. However, there have been a couple of developments that make me doubt the wisdom of paying the high retail cost of this set. First, "The Wizard of Oz" is now in both two-disc and three-disc editions rather than just the single disc edition you get here. Second, Warner Home Video has, in recent chats, discussed an upcoming Andy Hardy boxed set scheduled for release in 2008. Currently, "Love Finds Andy Hardy" is scheduled to be part of that set. Thus, you'll be double dipping on this title if you get both the Judy Garland Signature Collection and the upcoming Andy Hardy set. Warner is pretty good about not issuing duplicated titles in sets, but it has happened before, most prominently in the Henry Fonda Signature Collection - three of four titles in that set are in other boxed sets.

This leaves you with just five titles you can pretty much count on as being unique to this set, which doesn't justify what people are asking for this boxed set either used or new, even if Judy Garland was one of the great talents of the twentieth century - wonderful singer, actress, and overall performer. My final rating is arrived at as follows: five stars for the films themselves, and three stars for the value at the current price of the boxed set. This averages to my rating of four stars.

Some of Judy's finest works in great form. "A Star is Born" and "Wizard of Oz" would justify the price by themselves. The rest is great gravy.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good view of her talent   June 28, 2004

Judy was a magnificent talent with personal problems that makes it amazing that she could produce such beutiful prductions. These movies are a very good cross section of her talent. The Andy Hardy series was a wonderful joining of two great talents that represent a part of her career that many have been the happiest. There are many others that could have been chosen, but whatever was put in would require taking something out. I think "The Wizard" was the one waste, since there are much better copies out, and another Judy and Mickey would have been more fun.
But at least these are great, and others can be bought.
