Don't Cross Your Hired Gunman November 9, 2009 Lionel Bourg (Natchitoches, LA---USA) THIS GUN FOR HIRE(1942)---Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, Laird Cregar, Robert Preston, Tully Marshall.
Ladd's first major role and his first pairing with Veronica Lake. Ladd is the "gun for hire" who is out for revenge after being double-crossed by Cregar. This film is often cited as one of the "great" film noirs---it's good, it's noir, but I don't know that I would call it "great---be that as it may, it definitely belongs in any respectable noir collection.
LADD'S ITCHY FINGER'S ON THE TRIGGER September 9, 2009 Robin Simmons (Palm Springs area, CA United States) Great title and Ladd at his best in a dark drama of love and hate, life and death.
Underrated director Frank Tuttle directs Alan Ladd and Veronica lake (and her amazing hair) in what is now considered a classic film noir.
Set in San Francisco during World War II, Philip Raven (Ladd) is a cold-blooded hired killer. He's hired to murder a chemist in possession of Nitrochemical Corporation's formula for poison gas, which he is using to blackmail the Los Angeles-based company. Raven kills Baker and his secretary after retrieving the formula, and is paid $20,000 by Willard Gates, an executive for Nitrochemical. But Gates registers the numbers on the bills with the police and claims Raven robbed Nitrochemical. The story explodes in a desperate double hunt for survival and revenge. Best seen without further knowledge of the plot. Trust me please.
They rarely make them like this anymore. Too bad.

Fall in love March 27, 2009 JRS Hey, it's not a film moir classic for nothing. And you'll fall in love with Veronica Lake all over again. Add this film to your collection.
Riveting and beautifully made - first rate March 15, 2009 Douglas M "This Gun for Hire" is a cleverly adapted version of an excellent thriller "A Gun for Sale", written by Grahame Greene. Released in 1942, the film launched Alan Ladd to stardom. Ladd was a taciturn and limited actor who oozed charisma and the film is an excellent example of good casting and that mature acting skills are not required for cinematic success.
As a tormented and isolated loner, Ladd plays a hired killer who seeks revenge on the gross Llaird Cregar who has employed him for an assassination but paid in marked currency thereby setting him up to be incriminated. The introduction of Ladd, filmed with almost no dialogue is justly famous.
The film is very well made by the anonymous director Frank Tuttle. Maybe the material inspired him. There are some excellent location scenes, fluid camerawork and excellent editing, linking all the incidents logically and smoothly together.
The film is famous as the first appearance together of Ladd with Veronica Lake. Lake was another good example of a performer with limited acting skills but overwhelming charisma. She is at her best here, performing with some range as she interacts warmly with boyfriend cop Robert Preston (a thankless role), with natural friendliness then distrust towards employer Cregar and finally with toughness then gentility towards twisted Ladd. This is an excellent performance.
The DVD print is in superb condition but there are no extras except a few trailers of subsequent Ladd/Lake teamings.
