5 out of 5 stars A Gem !   October 19, 2009
Spins N. Needles (Punta Gorda, FL United States)
I cannot get enough of good westerns. Unfortunately, I suspect that many of the westerns of the 1930's and 1940's are decaying or have already disintegrated or otherwise been lost. For instance, it seems strange to me that I have not yet been able to find most of Randolph Scott's movies in digitally remastered and pristine condition. This film, Dodge City, makes me wish Errol Flynn had been more active in westerns in his prime (1935-1940). The quality of this film (acting and script superb) and the quality of this print (again, superb) help satisfy the yearning for good old-time Hollywood westerns. Powers that be ... please give us more of the other western stars, too!

5 out of 5 stars The Australian Cowboy   July 26, 2009
Bobby Underwood (Bakersfield, California United States)

"That's one fight you Yanks didn't win. But take it easy. We'll send the vet right over!" -- Tex

Errol Flynn cut a dashing trail through the American West for the first time in Dodge City. Flynn, an Australian, always worried he would not be accepted as a western hero. But rather than mold him to a type, Flynn's charisma and charm helped put his own stamp on the genre, making for a delightful if bit different entry of wagon trains and wild towns. Everything about this western is slightly different, from Flynn's wide brimmed hat, to its deceptively easygoing manner, camouflaging the lighting pace of director Michael Curtiz. The original screenplay by Robert Buckner is an enjoyable piece of entertainment. You know you're watching a western, but it doesn't feel like you are, at least in any traditional sense. It was simply Flynn and the WB stock company saddling up, and the results are fabulous.

Th film opens in Kansas after the Civil War, Wade Hatton (Flynn) and his trail pals helping Colonel Dodge (Henry O'Neil) bring the railroad and the civilization that would follow along with it. It is here that the bitter conflict with Jeff Surrett (Bruce Cabot) and his henchman Yancy (Victor Jory) emerges for the first time. Six years later, Wade and his pals, Rusty (Alan Hale) and Tex (Guinn "Big Boy" Williams), are taking their herd to Dodge. They've offered protection to a wagon train with a young and lovely Abbie Irving (Olivia de Havilland) along. Her young and rambunctious brother will force a tragedy upon the trail for which she blames Wade. Orphaned and traveling west, he'll deliver her to her aunt and uncle in Dodge, a wild and lawless town rife with fun and danger.

Alan Hale has some fun moments trying to reform while Guinn Williams does the opposite, resulting in perhaps the greatest saloon brawl ever filmed. It is fun to watch, as is everything in this film; especially Flynn, who somehow managed to seem more Aussie here, yet made his own niche in the western. The cheating and killing by Surrett and his man Yancey will finally go too far, however, when a young boy Wade was fond of loses his life during a disturbance, and he finally accepts the offer as Sheriff of Dodge City. He cleans up the town with Rusty and Tex, as families begin to return, while the paper Abbie now works for begins exposing Surrett and his hold on the town, leading to an exciting technicolor showdown.

There is a wonderful ending for fans of Flynn and de Havilland, and silent film fans will be glad to catch a glimpse of star Monte Blue as Barlow, still kicking around in films in 1939. This one is simply fun, and the perfect film for a Saturday morning when you want to kick back.

5 out of 5 stars WONDROUS WESTERN CLASSIC IS LOADS OF FUN   July 6, 2009
FRED C. DOBBS (USA)
WOW! What a greatly entertaining classic this is! Director Michael Curtiz really cranks it up a notch with this one. This wonderful, technicolor Western is exciting, funny, tragic, suspenseful, romantic...and a little bit of everything else, whew! It had a great hero [Errol Flynn as Wade Hatton], a great villain [Victor Jory], the great guy you love to hate [Bruce Cabot], the adorable little kid and, of course, Olivia. All about the unbridled, lawless cowtown of Dodge City, Kansas, and the attempts to restore it to the God-fearing, family town and bridge to the West that it was meant to be. Great start as standard stagecoach races a modern locomotive to the town. Amazing scenes of bison strewn throughout the plains. The Sheriff-less town, however, is out of control with wanton violence, gambling and the retribution murder of cattlemen not willing to deal with criminal Cabot of KING KONG [1933] fame. Flynn is flanked by his frequent screen pals: the omnipresent Alan Hale as Rusty and Guinn Williams as Tex. Hale is funny and charming while the awesome Williams is a riot. They are so endearing that you'd just wish they were your pals. Flynn is a stalwart and courageous cattle agent who is asked to become town marshal but refuses. Things change dramatically, however, as another wanton shootout leads to the tragic death of a small boy. Time to put that badge on. This is an amazing film that included the forced sequestration of guns [remember UNFORGIVEN, 1992, and TOMBSTONE, 1993] and the intimidation and assassination of the town newspaper editor [remember THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALENCE, 1962] who is trying to support Flynn and expose Cabot and his gang. I could not help but have flashes of these three Westerns as I watched this film. The barroom brawl is a doozy, a classic production---you just gotta see it yourself. Jory, with that great sinister face, voice and demeanor is memorable. Cabot, who was the hero in the orig KING KONG, played the crooked, muderous cattleman and "owner" of Dodge City perturbingly well. Hey, even the Angel in IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE [1946], Henry Travers, is in this and Ward Bond is thrown in there somewhere, too. Overall, a splendid, wonderful, full-of-life Western classic that ,yet, has never received maximum honors from many pros. Overshdowed by STAGECOACH, GONE WITH THE WIND and THE WIZARD OF OZ---three iconic films---all in that incredible year of 1939 ? Still, I believe superior to STAGECOACH and a benchmark from which Westerns should be compared. I'm sure Mel Brooks would agree.

4 out of 5 stars Archetypal Western with Flynn's formula for Adventure. Still alot of fun.   March 24, 2009
James Simpson (USA)
1939 was probally the greatest year in Hollywood history. Cinemas were just packed with amazing films in seemingly every genre. The Western which had floundered for most of the decade had come full circle in '39 with John Ford's "Stagecoach", the film that set the standard for the modern Western and this film.

Michael Curtiz directs with his usual surehand, utilizing beautiful technicolor photography that has to rank as some of the loveliest of the period. The action scenes are directed with enthusiasm and competance, especially the mother of all bar-room brawl scenes that is one of the most impressive action sequences in film history.

The cast is all uniformly excellent, with Flynn lending the same kind of boyish enthuiasm and heroism that he did in many of his swashbucklers. He makes an ideal Western hero and of course is partnered with the inimitable , Alan Hale, as well as Guinn "Big Boy" Williams. Olivia Dehaviland is a lovely leading lady and her romance scenes with Flynn are as usual, delightful. Bruce Cabot and Victor Jory are perfectly hissable villains and add to the film immeasurably. Anne Sheridan is also on hand in a small supporting role as a beautiful dance hall girl, along with nearly the entire Warner Bros stock company.

The plot is one that set a standard. Very basic stuff about a greedy cattle rustler scaring "good folk" out of town and Flynn having to clean up the town. In fact, it was this plot that formed the basis for the ultimate Western send-up, that being Mel Brook's "Blazing Saddles".
Still, despite it's routine feeling, this film is such a delightful piece of escapism that no one has ever really cared.

The DVD is presented fairly well with a load of special features including Theatrical Trailer, a eight minute documentary on the film and Warner Night at the movies, which re-creates the feeling of going to a film in that era complete with short subjects and cartoons including the Oscar winning short, "Sons of Liberty" with Claude Rains.

This DVD is a must have for fans of escapist adventure, Westerns, Classic cinema and the greatest swashbuckler of them all, Errol Flynn in his first Cowboy role.

Lots of fun.
