"Ultimate" Film Noir Collection? Phooey! June 26, 2009 Ray N. (California, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'll admit upfront that I could only bear to watch one of these masterpieces being butchered in front of my eyes and ears, so keep that in mind. I'm partly writing this as a note to myself so I don't mistakenly buy it. I borrowed this same set (published by Passport, 2006) from the library. Suffering through one film (Detour) was enough to ruin the batch for me. The quality of the transfer (the "picture" as well as the "sound," if you can call it that) was lousy--Horrid! Far, far, far, inferior to another DVD I'd seen of the same film a few years ago, probably one from Netflix. Also, as other reviewers have mentioned, there's an idiotic logo on the screen which I found maddeningly distracting. This stuff is public domain, but regardless, the manufacturer felt the need to brand it like a calf. Ok, maybe on an itty bitty TV it wouldn't be so bad (for some folks), but those damn logos are one of the many reasons I don't subscribe to cable. And on my 12 foot screen the friggin' thing was the size of a rabid cat, and just as hard to ignore. Sure, at first glance, the price of this set seems a steal. Well, I literally wouldn't pay two bits for it. Shoot, I couldn't even stand watching it for free from the public library! Lotsa luck with this one, folks. Stick to Criterion and such.
Good value for the money September 27, 2007 Charles Kelly (Scottsdale, AZ USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This DVD is an excllent bargain. Lots of classic noir moview for little money. Technical quality of some could be better, but it's a great bargain.

So I ordered this DVD specifically for one of the movies in the description, and it turns out the movie is not even on the set!

You get what you pay for April 26, 2007 Steven Musil (Oakland, California) 39 out of 39 found this review helpful
These movies are wonderful examples of the genre, but the worst transfers I have ever seen. If you want to be reminded of what these movies looked like on late-night TV in the 1970s, this is the collection for you. The movies look like they were duped off a VCR/DVD combo. Images are grainy and washed out. Sound is scratchy and subpar. And to top it off, there is a logo in the bottom right corner of every frame of every movie that resembles a cable TV channel logo. Very disappointing.
