Great collection of early Hitchcock October 12, 2009 Morissa E. Raymond (Lincoln, NE USA) This is a great collection of Hitchcock's early films, and for such a bargain. Unfortunately the resolution, sound, and quality of many of these films is not that great because of how old they are. Also, I find since they are British films, sometimes it's difficult with the un-restored sound to understand what they are saying. Three of Hitchcock's better early films are included among the bunch: The Thirty-Nine Steps, The Lady Vanishes, and Sabotage. These works are great predecessors for some of Hitchcock's later works, and you can definitely see a great film maker in the making here. This is a must-have set for any Hitchcock fan and it even includes hard to find films like many of his silent films!
Mainly older stuff September 14, 2009 Kathy W (Baltimore) This is a 4-DVD set, 5 shows per DVD, approximately 28 hours of Black and White Hitchcock shows, ranging from 1926 to 1962, and varying from 24 to 98 minutes each. Some are silent movies and some are from the weekly Hitchcock television series.
Very mixed opinion on this. July 24, 2009 Stephen J. Baldassarre 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For starters, it's great to see Hitchcock's early works. My big gripes about this collection are how the media was handled. The transfers are very poor. I'm not talking about degraded film, which is what it is. I mean the film was obviously transferred on substandard equipment in a hurry. They didn't take care in preserving the contrast of the original films or the framing. It's like they used an old film/video chain with the camera on autoexpose. So when it cuts to something bright, it's overblown until the autoexpose compensates. When it cuts to something dark, like a title card, it's fine until the autoexposure responds making for words that blur together. The framing isn't very good, like words getting chopped off the edge or bottom of the screen etc. At one point, you can see the transfer system stop, rewind, then resume playing for a brief moment in the middle of a movie. The times & synopsis on the cover often have nothing to do with the actual program material. There's also a lot of skips on the DVD. Finally, there's too many movies on each disk making for bad compression artifacts. If they were on such a tight budget, they should have broken the load into 2x 4-disk sets on sold them separately. It was VERY badly handled project done by what I can only assume was an amateur who just didn't care. It's a shame because there's some great early movies here that would have been much more enjoyable if they had been handled properly. I'd be almost tempted to find some of those movies and retransfer them myself with a 35mm projector and a DVX100.
DVD player complains July 20, 2009 shalamo (Cincinnati, OH United States) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
All the discs in this set do not play properly in my DVD player . Some produce no picture or sound , and all cause the player to make noises suggesting it will seize up at any moment . Return policies make it impossible to return this defective product fairly so I am stuck on this one .
Nice collection for a great price! April 3, 2009 D. P. Wilson (Seaford, DE) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this 4-disc set back in December from the Walmart $5 DVDs bin and have been enjoying it greatly since then. None of the discs in my set have at any time had any problem playing properly; they all consistently play perfectly.
I am overall satisfied with picture and sound quality (and was pleasantly surprised, actually, as, frankly, I'd not expected anywhere near as good regarding either, having had intolerable past experiences with the old sub-par cheapie videotape messes put out in years past that were so disagreeable and disappointing to attempt to watch). Here, the picture and sound is as good as the old public domain film copies they were made from (keep in mind that we're talking about multi-generational copies of copies - degrading and picking up imperfections with each reproduction), so varies from movie to movie, but generally is entirely acceptable, and in a number of instances, in this set, actually what I consider very good.
That said, some of these movies do have very poor picture and/or sound quality, courtesy of the source material copied from (not Mill Creek Entertainment's fault). Nevertheless, this is a nice set, includes A LOT of great to good old movies (but also a few what I consider total clunkers), and you get a wonderful collection for very low price, that makes this set definitely worth buying if you're a Hitchcock or classic/old movies fan. I unhesitatingly recommend this collection.
A number of these movies, in their forms here, are ones you'll enjoy watching multiple times, while nearly all others are definitely worth watching at least once. I grew up during the era when old b&w movies were still airing routinely on t.v., during the pre-cable, pre-restorations, pre-digital years, so considered it a treat to see the movies in this set looking actually far BETTER here than how I remember them looking when I used to see certain ones of them airing on antenna-reception t.v. (and even later) looking and sounding FAR less crisp and clear than here.
Buy and enjoy!
