Wayne and his Quiet Man partner Maureen O'Hara reprise their large-boned lovers' quarrel in a Wild West variation on The Taming of the Shrew, while a cast of familiar supporting players do their best to avoid becoming collateral damage. The picture is fascinating as an attempt to adjust and update the Duke as all-American icon. Rancher George Washington McLintock owns most of the town that bears his name, but James Edward Grant's screenplay is at didactic pains to establish the benevolence and socio-political enlightenment of his reign. G.W.'s former Indian foes have become his pals, he enjoys nothing so much as playing chess with his Jewish merchant buddy (Jack Kruschen), and he's tolerant--as his fellow landowners are not--of the homesteaders crowding into the territory. In what now seems like prescience about where things were headed in the 1960s, he even does his best to achieve rapport with (gasp!) impatient youth. McLintock! was the first movie produced by eldest son Michael Wayne, and the first major assignment for director Andrew V. McLaglen (son of Quiet Man costar Victor). It steals like a bandit from a host of much better movies, but the Duke's great good humor and professionalism redoubtably anchor the proceedings. --Richard T. Jameson

We just got this the other day - really looked forward to watching it. My husband & I are big fans of the movie. It was such a letdown. Our old VHS copy is a better quality than this DVD. We thought that the DVD version would be much clearer and better sound quality. That couldn't have been further from the truth. We're very disappointed, and quite frankly disappointed that Amazon is even selling this DVD. Don't waste your money - worst quality DVD I've ever seen.

This is a finely focused and astute script turned into a funny, touching, honest film...riding on the iconic shoulders of John Wayne. Under the mostly bubbling surface lay some deep themes that are exposed but not dwelt upon. Comedy seems to work best when there is a semi-tragic base for it to take flight from. If you are of a certain age and grew-up in John Wayne World then this film will be a real treat.

The Good Times version of McLintock was of atrocious quality. It ruined the entire experience. THis version should not be sold unless there is a disclaimer of the poor quality.

No, you could never get away with making a film like MCCLINTOCK! during these politically correct times--a Western version of Shakespeare's timeless 'The Taming of the Shrew' complete with its female lead character being publicly humiliated (meaning she gets spanked). NOW would never let something like that happen these days, even when presented in good clean fun and with tongue firmly in cheek, which is what lends such rustic charm to this John Wayne classic.
Wayne plays G.W. McClintock, a rancher/entrepreneur who, after years of hardship building his cattle empire, is now living the high life. The beautiful Maureen O'Hara plays Mrs. McClintock who, now that she's been exposed to eastern culture and living, finds her husband crude, obnoxious, and boorish--yet still loves him. The chemistry between the two (as it is in all their films together) comes as easy as breathing air; in fact, Wayne wears this role like an old glove: in every scene he is exceedingly comfortable. The two of them are pure fun to watch.
But what is more enjoyable about MCCLINTOCK! is its plethora of other speaking roles, all of them done well. Some of my favorites include Chill Wills, Jack Kruschen, Patrick Wayne, Stefanie Powers, Strother Martin, Jerry Van Dyke, Yvonne De Carlo, and Big John Hamilton (as you can tell, this film contains lots of characters). MCCLINTOCK! is a sprawling, feel-good Western that is definitely one of The Duke's best--even though its misogynist bent might offend those who are a little sensitive.
