Amazon.com Product Description The Troy-Bilt 6.5-horsepower self-propelled chipper shredder vacuum features a powerful 6.5-horsepower engine for better performance and improved power. The unit has a 3-in-1 capability with a vacuum nozzle, chipper chute, and shredder to give you three clean-up tools for ultimate versatility. The 24-inch vacuum width is extra-wide for bigger clearance and makes quick work of large areas. The adjustable vacuum intake height will raise and lower the vacuum nozzle from 1/4-to-4-3/4-inches to accommodate varying ground conditions. Other features include a 3-inch chipping capacity, and a heavy-duty hardened-steel impeller and cast-iron shredding screen that reduces debris in a 10:1 reduction ratio. The self-propelled transmission has 1-forward speed for easier use, and provides plenty of maneuverability for large yards. The 3-bushel, felt-lined collection bag reduces dust when in use, and the 6-inch lockable front caster wheels and 10-by-4-inch fully pneumatic rear wheels provide ease in maneuverability. The chipper comes with a limited 2-year warranty on materials and workmanship. What's in the Box Chipper/shredder/vacuum, and safety goggles.

A great machine that needs a little improvement. October 27, 2008 D. Peabody (Boston, MA) I still own one of the original machines (formally manufactured by MTD and later sold to Troy-Bilt) and its nearing the time for an engine replacement. My only complaint is the bagging system. The design is poor. The bag is made of thick felt that leaves get stuck to and after two years, it began to rip at the seams. The other problem is the grommets used in the strap that hangs the bag. They all stretched and eventually broke. I bought a few snap clips and cable to hold the bag tight to the handle bars for easy removal. To make this machine perfect the collection bag should be made of the same thick nylon mesh used for grass bags on lawnmowers. Then, use a seatbelt strap/buckle to keep the bag securely on the machine. Otherwise, its been a great machine every fall since 1998.
Improved Product August 17, 2007 Eugene Garriepy 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Having owned a Troy-Bilt Chipper for 14 years, gives me the opportunity to compare the two machines. The new one is much improved but not without some quirkey issues. From the purchase to the delivery, all the steps were effortless and without a hitch. I found the machine easy to assemble with one exception. The chipper chute mounting holes did not line up. The enlargment of one of the holes took care of this. The machine does what the instructions say it can do. It works much better than its predecessor. However the pull start is in an awkward position and it is a bit loud, and there is no oil filler tube and dip stick. If available, buy a self-start model.
A little disappointed. August 7, 2007 Paul A. Renard (Pleasant Hill, California USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My old chipper vac (Model 47261, 5HP) is better---a bit beefier for chipping, and easier to adjust for vacuuming, plus has reverse, and 5 or so forward speeds. This model doesn't self-feed very well for the chipper. However, the vacuum doesn't seem to clog like my old one (probably because there is no screen in this one). The self-propelling feature is useless---only one forward speed and it's too fast. This vac is best for smallish, flat, non sloping, yards, with only moderate leaf clean up required. Chipper good only for small limbs, no good for twiggy brush.
Terrible Machine June 10, 2007 best4runner (New Mexico) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Just unpacked and used the chipper/vac. Unless you are chipping straight dowel rods, forget it. It fails the chip even small 1" branches and leaves. They bind in the shoot and you have to shut the chipper down. Things get even better when you stop it to clear the hopeless chipper. It will not restart, regardless of the effort. I am 6'-2" and visit the gym daily, but I cannot pull this thing hard enough for it to start. Very disappointed. Run, don't walk away from this one.
Powerful lawn vac May 31, 2007 J. E. Stachowicz (Edison, NJ USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased this after owning a Craftsman yard vac that gave up the ghost after 10 years of service. I purchased this from Amazon and had no problems. The shipping crate is quite large and I had to arrange to be home to accept delivery. Assembly of the unit was fairly straightforward, requiring only screw drivers and a wrench. One area of difficulty was assmebling the handles, which also attach to the tree branch chute. After much struggling, I had to place the unit on its side to finally line up all the attachment holes. Other reviewers have commented that their units are difficult to start or require a heavy pull. Honestly, I haven't experienced this. The unit usually starts on the first or second pull. In comparison to my old Craftsman vac, this unit is much, much heavier. Fortunately, being self-propelled, it moves fairly easily. One tip - make sure you unlock the front wheels and allow them to swivel. This greatly improves maneuverability of the unit. The ground intake is actually a fixed height, but with an adjustable "curtain" around the edge that is used to adjust ground clearance. For use on the lawn, you need to really set this at its highest setting otherwise the unit with just plow into the ground. The lower settings are more appropriate for use over walkways, patios, driveways and any other hard surfaces. So how well does it work? Actually, the unit has remarkable suction power. I have a fairly large yard edged by many old, large trees so small branches, twigs, bark, leaves and such always are around. The Troy-Bilt picks them up with no difficulty. The branch chute is fairly roomy an can take a 2 1/2 to 3 inch in diameter branch. A word of caution - older bent branches should be cut at any bend so that the pieces fed into the chute are relatively straight. You can get carried away and jam a branch and then need to shut everything down to extract the stuck branch. If I have one complaint of the unit, it's the method used to attach the collection bag. The exhaust of the chipper is a top mounted affair (the black chute you see rising from the center of the unit). The bag attachment uses a cinch and clamp to attach the opening to the chute - a webbed strap that you pull to tighten the bag opening around the exhaust and then the clamp which holds it in place. You really need to put some elbow grease in to really tighten that up otherwise exhaust dust and chips will blow out the opening. The rear of the bag attaches to metal studs on the handle. However, due to their placement at the top of the bag, when the bag is full it pulls down against the studs making bag removal difficult. I more or less abandoned emptying the bag by removing it and instead just leave the bag in place and unzip the back to empty out the back. Also, the bag itself, even when zipped and closed will produce a lot of dust that blows through the bag, so in addition to eye protection I would recomend using a dust mask when operating. As a chipper/shredder, this thing produces some of the most finely chopped output, even with woody items like branches. My old Craftsman just produced coarse, large wood chips. This thing pulverizes wood, so I usually spread the output around the garden like a mulch. I would have rated this 5 stars, except for the difficulty with part of the assmbly and the bag issues. Outside of that, I would definitely recommend the Troy-Bilt.
