Amazon.com Product Review The XPower Powerpack 1500 is a portable power system that produces household electricity for products rated at 1500 watts or less. A clean and quiet alternative to a generator, the XPower Powerpack integrates a 60 Amp/hour AGM battery with a 1500-watt inverter and produces a 3000-watt surge. This system is built to run a range of appliances such as a standard size refrigerator and microwave oven, and office equipment such as a computer, monitor, and fax machine.
The XPower Powerpack 1500 is designed for ultimate portability. See the product specifications. View the generator in greater detail. |
A convenient design feature allows for easy set-up of the cart. View larger. | The XPower Powerpack 1500 consists of a battery pack that stores electrical energy, state-of-the-art electronics that convert 12 volts from the battery pack to household power, an AC power panel that contains two standard outlets, and a DC power panel that is used to run 12 volt products. These components are packaged into a rugged "cart" with a removable waist handle that allows XPower Powerpack 1500 to be wheeled from room-to-room or outdoors over rough terrain. An excellent alternative to a generator, the XPower Powerpack produces no noise or fumes and has no moving parts. With the accessories provided, you can easily recharge the XPower Powerpack using standard utility power from your wall outlet, your vehicle, or from a solar panel. The XPower Powerpack can be used to produce power for numerous applications. For power emergencies it can run essential appliances like refrigerators, cordless/mobile phones, radios, fireplace fans, table lamps, or microwaves. For work sites, you can power your drills, belt sanders, circular saws, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, vacuums, computers, large monitors, fax machines, and inkjet printers. For plain old fun, you can use the power source to run blenders, video games, TV and VCRs, satellite equipment, coffee makers, portable coolers and more. The XPower Powerpack features a built-in 1500 watt inverter and sealed, non-spillable 60 Amp-hour AGM battery. Dual AC outlets allow operation of multiple products, and a built-in battery level indicator confirms the charge level. A high surge protection and automatic over-temperature and overload shutdown keeps the Powerpack running safely and efficiently, while a low voltage alarm and shutdown prevents deep battery discharge. You can recharge the Powerpack from home (up to 15 hours), or your vehicle (6 to 8 hours). A padded grip towing handle removes easily for storage in tight places, and built-in handles on sides allow for easy lifting. The XPower Powerpack measures 14.8 x 15.6 x 12.3 inches (HxWxD), weighs 60 pounds, and is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

XANTREX 1500 BACK UP POWER SYSTEM October 27, 2009 George Baldwin (Great State Of TEXAS) We purchased this back up system to power minor medical equipment in case of power failure. So far it is doing what we expected.
A generator was out of the question therefore, the Xantrex was the answer for our needs.
DO NOT buy this--take it from a Mechanical Engineer October 17, 2009 Gordon L. Mcdaniel (Republic of Texas) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I see Amazon has changed the title listing of this unit due, no doubt, to complaints about the "1500kW, 60Ah" hype that has sold so many of these units for Xantrex. Of course, the one I have is in reality a "1350kW, 51Ah" unit (which was advertised as a bigger/better 1500kW etc). It's performance on normal loads, and recharge times, is pretty bad. Amazon's "NEW" product has "60Ah AGM" in the "new" product title--is it any different than what I bought under the old label?...only the Shadow knows.
...I echo many reviewers who say that Xantrex product support is "nonexistent". they don't even have an 800 number. They never answer email...Let's put it this way: if I want to listen, on hold, to classical music on a toll number line (AC 408) then I will instead spend the money on a 900 number--either way I get jer**d off and the 900 number is more useful and fun.
...I have, probably unwisely, ordered a 53Ah auxiliary SLA/AGM to hook to the external terminals of this 802-1500 to provide added capacity. I (finally) got an East Indian techie to come on line, at that AC 408 number, and he said I can attach up to a 60Ah SLA/AGM externally as long as I buy a charger to charge it seperately before I re-attach it to the 802's terminals--no problem. Switching-mode chargers for SLA's are all over the place.
...I'll give further feedback on how this all works, if I am allowed to comment.
...I am a retired multi-degree'd mechanical engineer, not a pedestrian, and I have no company affiliation. I am interested in not getting screwed and not having hard working folks get screwed out of their hard-earned money with over-hyped products.
Perfect for camping! July 26, 2009 Michael Baker (Happyrock, OR USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We've been using a couple of these units for the past 5 years. They work perfectly for camping because of their portability. They're also versatile. When they're not being used for camping, I store them in the garage with their 5-amp float chargers attached so that we have a source of power in an emergency. Last winter during a snow storm we lost power for several hours. During the outage we used our battery boxes to power two christmas tree light-sets and a couple of lamps.
Each unit includes a 12V 63AH battery-set consisting of three 12V 21AH SLA AGM batteries. Each unit can be augmented with an additional 63AH battery-set for a toal of 126AH or 1512 watt-hour available as 120VAC via a 1350 watt continuous-use inverter. The inverter is capable of providing 1500 watts for no more than 10 minutes, and 3000 watts for a short period (start-up current). We recharge them in the woods with an 80 watt PV solar panel, which can't keep up with our use while camping, but it does slow their discharge rate down a bit.
This year I had to replace the batteries because they weren't holding much of a charge. The capacity of SLA batteries is a function of time and after 5 years have roughly 40% of their original capacity. Replacement 12V 17-21AH batteries cost from $40.00 to $50.00 each.
Here's a link to a Powersonic 12V 21AH SLA battey. Powersonic PSH-12180FR - 12 Volt/21 Amp Hour Sealed Lead Acid Battery with Nut-Bolt Connector and Flame retardent case.
Next year I'm going to add 63AH battery-boxes to each of them to boost their capacity. This will give us 3024 watt-hours of portable power! (cue Tim Allen)
The reason why I gave it 4 stars vs. 5 is because the handle and wheels are a bit winkey.
Nice Backup for what it is May 24, 2009 Arik (Cincinnat, Ohio) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had this for a month now and am basically happy with it. I think my expectations were unreal when purchasing it. Expecting to run a fridge for hours is just not going to happen. However, I am able to run the fridge steady for an hour (opening the door to keep it going) as well as run my lawn edger, trimmer and blower. Higher amp items don't work as I found with an electric chipper I have. All in all I'm happy with the product. I paired this with an 80 watt solar panel and I can charge it from dead to full within 2 sunny days here in Ohio. In an electric emergency I feel I could rotate the solar panel and charge it in one day.
Nice for portable power, hope I never find out how well it works as emergency backup but I think it will be fine for keeping food from spoiling.
A good start for a backup power system April 20, 2009 W. Bellant (Renton, Wa United States) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought one of these units a year ago and have been somewhat pleased. The basic cart worked well enough but when I put much of a load on it, it would cut out. Then I added 4 of the 18 amp hour sealed batteries that they recommend in their directions and am very happy with the results. I even pulled out my monster Kirby vacuum cleaner (the kind with powered wheels) and vacuumed my whole 2bdrm condo. I bought a couple solar panels and a charge controller and wired them up during a practice power outage (I shutoff all the circuits in my fuse box except my refrigerator) and went through a day without power. I highly recommend this for anyone who's serious about preparing for power interruptions.
The directions recommend sealed batteries since you can roll the cart around without smelling battery acid or spilling it on your carpet. If you're really serious about this stuff though, you might even want to pickup a few serious deep cycle batteries and put them in a stationary location and use a cable to connect it to the cart.
I did notice one slight drawback. The inverter seems to kick out some noise if I use it to power my ancient boom box from the 80's. You might need to get a pure sign wave inverter if you're going to power sensitive electronic equipment.
If the price of this cart is too much, you can make a stationary version of this with a couple sealed deep cycle batteries, a charger for it (that shuts off automatically, like the one that comes with the cart) and a good sized inverter. You could throw it all in one of those plastic boxes that can buy at any big box store.
