Inexpensive and good for basic usage May 6, 2008 E. Blood (Ft Lauderdale, FL) Or if your budget is tight. You need to be close to the wire to get the tone with the probe (a few milimeters) but it allows you to pinpoint exactly which wire you're trying to find. If you are a professional that will rely heavily on it, go with something a little higher end but for occasional tracing, this will be a good product.
Works for most uses January 18, 2008 Jimmy L. Hutchins (Portland, OR USA) I bought this tone generator to track down some speaker wires in the ceiling that had been installed during initial construction. Because they were in a highly visible location, I needed to be precise when cutting the hole for the speakers. The Extech worked for this application but beware that the tone is fairly weak and the detector tip must be within a few inches to pick it up. Worked OK through sheetrock.
Works Well December 3, 2007 Charles G. (San Francisco, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This thing works well for its intended purpose and is of high quality. To one of the earlier posters, it isn't *supposed* to find wiring behind wall board, it is intended to locate wires on a punch down block or other available source. And for that job, it works perfectly. Highest recommendation.
As good as it gets June 28, 2007 Archangel 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been using this "toner" kit for more than a year now on a nearly daily basis and it works very well. I use it in an industrial environment for identifying circuit wiring for things such as street and area lighting, motor wiring, instrumentation wiring and the like. It is one of the most used and most useful items in my tool collection and has proven to be very durable and reliable over this entire time. This is a great product for what is was designed to do.
Good but limited May 13, 2007 bionicbuilder (Los Angeles, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This product is easy to use and economical. It really works well for identifying wires in a bundle, and matching wires with speakers. What it does not do at all is tracing wires behind wall board. The probe needs to be within a few millimeters of the cable to detect the signal.
