By the power of Belkin, I have the power! March 19, 2008 iansomniak (USA, Planet Earth) If your home has too many appliances and not enough electrical outlets, and if you want to protect all those appliances from unexpected power surges, what you need is a surge protector...and the heroically-named SURGEMASTER by Belkin is a nice one. This particular protector sports a metal case, which undoubtedly makes it safer and more durable than the typical all-plastic models, but it should be noted that only the top and sides are metal; the back appears to be hard plastic. The SURGEMASTER is off-white in color, measures 12 inches in length and has a 6-foot power cord. There is a green "Grounded" light, a green "Protected" light and an orange On and Off switch. It has spaces for six three-pronged plugs, four of which are close together, with some distance between the last two to make room for those boxy AC adapters. On the end of the SURGEMASTER are three phone/fax/modem jacks, but you may not be able to see them at first because they're hidden under a very sticky warning sticker, which explains how to properly protect your phone/fax/modem...of course the first step toward properly protecting your phone/fax/modem is the removal of this bothersome sticker. According to the back of the SURGEMASTER package, this "Home Series" model is designed to protect entry-level computers (up to 1 GHz); household electronics; lamps; kitchen appliances and TVs up to 27-inches. If you want to protect a "mid-level" computer and/or a 35-inch TV, you're supposed to buy a surge protector from Belkin's "Superior Series." And, if you have an "advanced" computer (up to 1.7 GHz) or a TV larger than 36-inches, they recommend a "Maximum Series" surge protector. I'm not sure if all that protection is absolutely necessary, but it's something to consider if you own some super-expensive equipment. At any rate, the Home Series SURGEMASTER comes with a connected equipment warranty of up to 75-thousand bucks and a lifetime product warranty against any defects in material or workmanship. NPD Intelect (whoever that is) calls Belkin, "Number 1 in surge protection." I'll just say, Belkin is swell-kin.
