Big time saver in tracing alarm wires July 15, 2008 J. Parrott (Pennsylvania) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When our house was built it was wired for an alarm system but the system was not installed. So, the alarm wiring is behind the sheetrock, no records of location (company that installed is out of business) and with about 15 wires that I could not trace visually this unit saved me a lot of time. I only cut into one place by mistake and that is outstanding in my book. The one mistake I ended up making was caused by a thermostat wire which ran in the same bundle. You can get cross talk! It takes a little trial and error to make sure you are on the right wire and as you work the trace, keep reducing the sensitivity on the probe. Put a piece of blue making tape to mark the spot. Check your stud locations and see if it all makes sense before cutting. For what I paid for this unit it is a real bargain and paid for itself many times over in labor saving. Not fool proof but darn good results are possible.
Big time saver - pays for itself first use June 9, 2008 TheBigOldDog 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had a dead phone jack in one of my bedrooms. I have multiple jacks in each room and they all run to a patch panel in the basement. I hooked this up to the jack, walked down to the basement despite dozens and dozens of lines I was able to pick the line right out. Turns out one of the wires wasn't punched down all the way. I have no idea how I would have ever found and fixed the line without this little lifesaver. I would have either moved the phone to another jack or would have run an extension. With this little beauty I didn't have to compromise!
Works great if you know how to use it May 23, 2008 Y. Ke (United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this product to trace ethernet wires in the house. You can plug the phone (RJ11) plug into ethernet (RJ45) with no problems at all. The product works great, provided you know how to use it. Some of the other reviews suggested that the device does not work as advertised. It is true that the sensor probe picks up everything. However, if you hook up the emitter properly, you will get a much stronger signal from the tracker wire than from the other wires. In addition, you will hear a two-tone, siren-like sound from the probe when you're near the tracker wire, whereas you won't hear anything from the other wires. So, the my advice for using this device properly is as follows: LED -- Off, Sound -- Off: Not close to any wires. LED -- On, Sound -- Off: Close to wires but not the right one. LED -- On, Sound -- On: Found the right wire! I give it a four star rating because it does work, but it should have come with a better instruction manual.
gets the job done May 12, 2007 Romeo Mazzaluna (raleigh, nc) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i used this side by side with another tone generator and probe, and it worked just as good. just have to know how to use it. go by the tone, not the light. The light will give false positives from electrical if your trying to find wire behind home walls. Cut the power to the house if you can. Pratice by putting a wire behind a door and check your readings. Not a bad deal, works great for coax, in wall speaker wire.
GET-4110K Wire-Tracker January 10, 2007 J. Chancey (Kansas) This is a handy tool for tracking down wiring and locating opens. Using this tool I was able to track down a house wire to determine exactly where the open/bad connection was located. The signal is a bit weak after 30', but it worked as described. The useage directions were easy to follow. A great tool for any home handyman.
