Amazon.com Product Description
The GenTran 30 Amp 8-circuit transfer switch for up to 7,500-watt generators includes everything you'll need to install a generator transfer switch for safe, convenient portable generator hookup. Power up your essential circuits using a 5,000-watt generator (continuous watts) during a power outage or emergency. It accommodates 8-to-10 household circuits like your furnace blower (gas only), refrigerator and kitchen circuits, well pump, lights, and television. If your needs change, your installer can easily expand this transfer switch to up to ten circuits just by adding more circuit breakers. The enclosure can be surface mounted indoors, and allows hardwired or plug-in generator connections. Because it was designed with off-the-shelf circuit breakers you don't have to search high and low for replacements, and your installer can reconfigure the breaker combinations to suit your family's needs.

This transfer switch includes a L14-30 male power inlet and a dual watt meters to help you balance generator loads to prolong generator life. The kit comes with two 15 Amp 1-pole breakers, two 20 Amp 1-pole breakers, one 2-pole 20 Amp breaker, and one 2-pole 30 Amp breaker. A 60 Amp 2-pole main breaker is required in existing load center (not included). This kit comes with a 2-year limited warranty.

5 out of 5 stars GenTran 30 Amp Transfer Box   November 12, 2007

After my transfer box came in, I was able to make final plans for my particular needs. I did not need any of the available 230 volt transfer breakers, so I removed them and replaced them with additional 115 volt circuits. My final count is 4, 20 amp breakers, and 6, 15 amp breakers. I was able to do this with locally available parts. I added the two additional 115 volt circuits that were optional at that time and added the connection wires to run it with. My installation is as a flush mount next to the main entrance pannel. I also bought the flush mounting plate available. It has worked out just great. The most dificult part was the drilling of the 2 inch hole in the stud which mounted the main entrance. That was done using a right angle drive unit for my drill I bought for the installation. After all the circuits were tied in, I tested the installation for loading and ballance, and all worked well. I had run the freezer and the house fridge on the generator during the install. They were switched back over to the mains. I made up a 25 foot extension cord to connect the generator to the transfer pannel using #8 cableing. That's a bit of an overkill, but I'm happy knowing that will never be a weak link. The generator I am using with the system is a 6,500 /8,200 watt, 13 HP unit. It carried the load very well with all circuits on. I recommend this thransfer box for anyone needing a manual transfer box. It is neat as installed and works well. It went in in about 4 hours with two of us working on it that had never done this before. I suggest that anyone thinking about doing this go to the GenTran site and download the instruction sheet to review the installation instructions. You can plan better and avoid surprises better that way. Good Luck. I hope this is helpful.

I feel that this switch will perform very well if needed in a power outage.
It is a lot better than what is available in stores here!

This product scores a "home run" in my book. Everything you need (except a cord) to connect a portable generator to your house is in this box. I chose this model because my electrical needs during a power outage are minimal. This model box will support up to 10 circuts. (If you are using only 20 & 15 amp circuts.) The great thing about this box is that the type of breaker switches in the box were the same as my house, so I was able to utilize a couple 20 amp breakers. The box came wired for one 240 volt 30 amp breaker circut. I didn't need it for anything, so I was able to gain 4 more 20 or 15 amp circuts. (I only needed two more 20 amp.) Overall, if you have a sheltered area to connect this product to your utility box and run your portable generator, then all you need is a connecting cord from the generator to the transfer switch box. Great product design!
