This kit includes a prewired 8-circuit transfer switch, a 25-foot power cord and a power inlet box enclosure. Power up your essential circuits using a 5,000-watt generator (continuous watts) during a power outage or emergency. It accommodates 8-to-10 household circuits like your furnace blower (gas only), refrigerator and kitchen circuits, well pump, lights, and television. If your needs change, your installer can easily expand this transfer switch to up to ten circuits just by adding more circuit breakers. The enclosure can be surface mounted indoors, and allows hardwired or plug-in generator connections. Because it was designed with off-the-shelf circuit breakers you don't have to search high and low for replacements, and your installer can reconfigure the breaker combinations to suit your family's needs. This transfer switch has a L14-30 male power inlet and a dual watt meters to help you balance generator loads to prolong generator life. This transfer switch package provides everything you need to safely supply power all through the house without extension cords. Installation is straightforward and, when combined with a flush mounting flange (not included in this kit) the results are professional looking. Operation could not be easier or safer. My 7500w generator is able to supply virtually all house loads with the exception of an electric dryer and central air conditioning. I am completely satisfied with this transfer switch and have personally recommended it to several neighbors.

I installed this transfer switch several weeks ago and have the following comments;
This unit comes pre-wired and with excellent instructions. I installed it myself as I have worked in the building trades for many years and always do my own wiring. For those of you not quite so comfortable with electricity, a licensed electrician is highly recommended.
As noted in the product description, there is an interlock on the "main" breaker of this unit to prevent back-feeding generator power through the utility transmission lines. This feature allows me to exercise the generator monthly, (which should be done to avoid fuel/carburetor problems on the generator) under load, so seamlessly that I don't even have to reset my electronic appliance clocks. It also means that I will not be contributing to the death or injury of a electrical utility worker due to a back-feed situation.
Another plus with this unit are the dual watt meters that allow you to monitor the load so that you don't exceed your generators' capacity. It also allows you to monitor the load on both 110 volt "legs" of the generator to make sure they are more or less balanced. This is said to extend the life of your generator.
Over-all this is the most pleased I've been with a product in some time. I'm also pleased that it's made in the USA.

I purchased this transfer switch because it was expandable to nine circuits, bought the breaker I needed, and installed it in the wall, rather than on it. I used the plug in the switch to mount in the box outside and covered the hole with the plate GenTran provided. We lost power two nights ago and the switch worked perfectly (I did have an electrician wire it in). I bought a 6KW diesel generator and this switch handles it nicely. I would recommend this switch to anyone wanting to install their own emergency power system, as opposed to buying a complete packaged system. The instructions were clear - if you have basic electrical knowledge you could do it yourself, but I'm chicken!

I'd like to address the comment made about our 3028K kit. We always recommend professional installation by a licensed electrician familiar with local and national codes, and familiar with portable generators. We include a power inlet box enclosure in this kit package in order to save the consumer money. We include a power inlet mounted in the transfer switch when plug-in connection is desired, as in a garage installation. But when the transfer switch is hardwired, as in a basement installation, the inlet is not needed, and can be removed. A professional installer would remove the inlet from the transfer switch and reinstall it in the power inlet enclosure...So you're not paying for the inlet twice. That was our reasoning behind the decision - to save the consumer from paying for the same component in the kit twice. We stand behind our products 100%, and we apologize that the information you received was misleading.

I was looking for a good deal on a transfer switch with all the accessories needed to hook up a portable generator from outside the house because it could get costly. I ran across this GenTran package which was supposed to include the transfer switch box with circuit breakers, a 25 foot cord, and the power inlet box. The cord is used to attach the generator to the power inlet box which in turn connects to the transfer switch box that remains indoors right next to your circuit breaker panel. The power inlet box is mounted outdoors on the outside part of the wall which holds the transfer switch box and your circuit breaker panel on the inside. In other words the power inlet box is mounted on the siding of your house and wire is run through the wall to the transfer switch that's inside the house. The idea is that you don't have to bring the cord from the portable generator, which must remain outdoors, through an open window or door. Amazon also sells these items separately and they all have their own individual description when they are looked up separately. However when grouped together in one package they are offered at a price that is less than if you were to buy each item individually. When they are offered in the package, only the main item which is the transfer switch is described with any detail and the other two items the cord and power inlet box are just stated that they come with the transfer switch. I assumed that the three items would be as the identical three items were described individually. To verify this I called Amazon and spoke to a woman who really didn't know much about transfer switches but who also assumed that each item would be how it was described individually and together we decided that's how it would be. It was logical. When I asked her about the price difference she said that when items were packaged together as one that Amazon receives a discount from the vendor and passes that discount on to the customer. The difference in price between buying the items separately or together as a package amounted almost to the cost of the power inlet box that was listed on a different page by itself. The only reason I chose this brand was because of the package savings; had I chosen a different brand transfer switch where a package was not offered, I would have still needed to buy the other two accessories (the power cord and the power inlet box). When I received the package the transfer switch was as described individually except I didn't see where there is a place to add two more circuits as they stated but I'm not an electrician so I won't pass judgment on that. The cord was as described but when I looked at the power inlet box, it was just an empty box. It looked like GenTran forgot to assemble the box. I'm serious they called it a power inlet box and it was just a plain metal box; no outlet to plug into, no wires, nothing but air inside the box and the box doesn't even have a lid to close so it's an open empty box. I still need to contact Amazon about this issue and see what they will do about it. The way it is now I would have been able to get a Transfer Switch and a Cord without a power inlet box from another manufacturer for less than what I paid for this package. Now do you want to hear something ridiculous? I called the company, GenTran, and I told them I had received this package and the power inlet box was just an empty box with nothing inside and it didn't even have a lid on it to close. They told me that I was supposed to disconnect the receptacle that's on the transfer switch, wire nut the connections inside then cover it with a blank plate they had put in the box and then wire it into the power inlet box and then hang the box upside down so water doesn't get into the receptacle; if I wanted a lid for the box they would sell one to me as they said the lid for this box was optional. WHY DO THEY CALL IT A POWER INLET BOX? It should be called AN EMPTY METAL BOX WITHOUT A LID. There are two other things I would like to know. How much is it going to cost me to have the electrician who is putting this together for me wire up the "power inlet" box that doesn't have a way to put power into it because it's just an empty box with no lid. The second thing I would like to know is what happens if there is a snow storm which has caused the electricity in my house to go out and the snow is too deep for me to wheel the generator around to the side of the house where the power inlet box would be; how do I plug it into the Transfer Switch after the receptacle has been removed by the electrician and placed in the empty power inlet box attached to the house in a place that I can't access because there is too much snow on the ground. Just to have an electrician wire up that empty box with the receptacle that he is supposed to take out of the transfer switch will cost more than what the power inlet box is worth. DON'T BUY THIS PACKAGE THE COMPANY IS USING SMOKE AND MIRRORS TO FOOL YOU INTO THINKING YOU ARE GETTING A GOOD DEAL WHEN IN FACT YOU ARE ONLY GETTING A HEADACHE.
