Product Description
Timer switch turns lights on and off based on sunrise/sunset in your area. You don't have to spend hours adjusting the programmed on and off times on a light switch timer as the seasons change. Program your lights or appliances to turn on at sunset based specifically on your area with the Aube Solar Timer Switch 2400W, an attractive timer switch that can control incandescent, halogen or fluorescent lighting or even a 1-HP motor. Need to find something quickly late at night? No problem: The Aube Solar Timer Switch 2400W offers a manual override, which enables the load to be turned on and off without affecting the programming. A Decora-style wall plate is not included. Mount the Aube Solar Timer Switch 2400W onto a standard single or multi-gang electrical box. Program your city's longitude and latitude based on the included guide, and the Aube Solar Timer Switch 2400W will make sure your lights are on when you get home after dark. It even adjusts automatically for Daylight Saving Time if you live in an applicable zone. Programs are protected against a power failure by a pre-installed rechargeable battery. You can take advantage of optional on and off settings to turn lights on at a specific time and off at sunrise, as an example. Additional features include an LCD that shows the time, day and load status.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing product   November 13, 2009

Just the thing that I was looking for. Very easy programming. You enter the latitude and longitude, set up the current time and feed the time when you want to switch on and off. It takes care of the rest.

By default, after the initial settings (latitude, longitude & clock), it is set up to switch on at sunset and switch off at sunrise. But, you can easily change the programming to, say, switch on at sunset; switch off at 10pm and again switch on at 4am, switch off at sunrise. It allows two sets of switch on and off setting (ON1-OFF1-ON2-OFF2). If you leave OFF1 and ON2 as blank, it uses ON1 and OFF2. I have mine set up to switch on at sunset and switch off at 10pm. Works like a charm.

To make minor adjustments on the sunset/sunrise time, you can enter a slightly different longitude. For example, I wanted the unit to switch on about 10 minutes after sunset, so I entered a longitude 3 degrees west of where I am.

You can do a manual override any time by pressing the lid down. If you press it down for 3 seconds, the unit goes to manual mode.

There are a couple of notes:-

1. You need the black and white wires at the swich box to install it.
2. You have to manually switch the unit to daylight savings mode and back.

Even Honeywell errs once in a while. :) Nice switch.

The seller ( BargainBulbs ) sent a new unit asap.

What a Wonderful Piece of Innovation! I don't need to keep adjusting the on/off time settings as the sunset/sunrise times change throughout the year.

The only difficulty I had with this timer was --> I couldn't get it to switch into Automatic mode, it was only acting as a Manual switch. I finally found a section in the instructions that states that the unit will power up and stay in "Manual" mode until you set it to "Automatic" mode by pushing the switch in for about 3 seconds. They need to highlight this piece of information more in the instructions (it was kind of hidden).

Other than that, the instructions were clear and the timer is GREAT!

I'm trying to think of other places I can use more of these.

I BOUGHT THIS AT AMAZON ON 9/22/09 FOR $23.95. SINCE THEN I'VE SEEN AMAZON'S PRICE AS HIGH AS $81.95 . . . . RIGHT NOW (10/1/09) IT'S $36.95 . . . . HEY AMAZON, WHAT'S THE DEAL??

4 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, but needs a simpler instruction book   September 30, 2009

I purchased this unit to replace another dead timer. It's working fine now that I have it installed, but a couple things would be nice improvements.

1. The instructions are printed in tiny type (these old eyes neede a magnifying glass), and pretty convoluted. You can set it to start at sundown and shut off at dawn, but to get other times set up took three readings of the instructions.

2. Unless I missed something in that tiny type, you can't set it to come on at dusk and stay on until the small hours of the morning (say 1 am). It'll automatically shut off at midnight, so if you want it to shut off and come back on in early morning, you have to program the first shutoff before midnight.

3. If you set it to daylight saving time, all the times you set will be off by an hour until DST ends.

4. Unlike the timer I replaced, this one starts and stops precisely at the time set. There's no randomness to make the place look "lived in". That's a purely value-driven judgement, but be aware.

As for longevity, I've only had it for a few months, and the one I replaced lasted five years, so I'll wait to see how it does.

5 out of 5 stars Battery-free. Good customer service.   September 29, 2009

I have used Intermatic timer switches for 10 years, with great deal of frustration. The switch dies way too easily. Then the new ones require expensive battery, and again they quit as well. But Intermatic is all I can find in the big box retailers. I am glad that I found this Honeywell Aube switch on the web. It offers the same features as the Intermatic, and hopefully lasts longer.

The installation is straight forward, if you have the instructions at hand. I feel that the Intermatic setup is more intuitive, and hope that the Aube product designer can improve on this point. Especially on the entry of time zone, you better keep the instructions for future reference. But hopefully I don't need to install another one as frequently as the Intermatic. So I do not deduct a star for it.

One thing I like about this switch is that it does not need backup battery. One less thing to maintain.

I had question about the 3-wire installation, and called the Aube customer service. I was skeptical because I could never talk to anyone at Intermatic. But, pleasant surprise. The Aube staff explained to me that as long as I ground the neutral wire, the switch will work, even though it is against the "code". It has been working fine for a month now. I am happy that I don't need to check every night whether the outdoor lights are on.
