Great product, clean look December 31, 2007 M. Gurka (San Antonio, TX) This product does what it says and provides a clean decora look. Ever since my wife got pregnant, I've been reviewing various safety featrues for our house. I don't like the look of the outlet caps or the twisting face plates. I wanted something that I could install and not worry about, and keep in the house after the children are old enough to know better. This product fits the bill perfectly. The night light outlet is great too. I just wish there was an option to buy the child safety outlets without the nightlight. Going through my house, the need for a nightlight to a child safe outlet is nott 1:4. So, after I make my was through the house, I'll be stuck with a number of night lights that won't have a home.
Contiuous Protection and the bonus light is very nice. October 13, 2007 Timothy A. Behr (Edina, MN United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The only downside is that you need to replace the receptacle, which means working with wiring. This doesn't bother me, but may be more than many want to take on. They work by blocking the internal connections inside the receptacle. There is a small cover inside that blocks the two slits. If you try to place an object into the smaller one (the hot side), you can't. If you place an object into the larger one (the neutral side), it slides open the cover on both sides, allowing a plug to be inserted into both hot and neutral. Since the neutral side is safe, there's little danger of electrocution if a child plays with just that side. You just need to remember that when you plug something in, you need to push on the left side first to open up the hot side. The night light is a very nice bonus. Since I've only been able to find these outlets in this exact pack, I have quite a few of these lights. They're LED so they don't get hot and they use very little power. They're also controlled with a light sensor so they're only on when it's dark, which makes them consume even less power. They're bright enough to light hallways and rooms when your eyes are adjusted for night vision. I tried all kinds of other devices including plastic plugs and outlet covers. Plugs are a hassle because you need to remove them and store them when you want to plug something in. And you need to remember to put them back when you done. They also seem to find their way all over the house and you wind up finding them everywhere, usually with bare feet. I've tried two types of cover plates, twist and sideways slide and they work well most of the time. The twisty ones are easier for me to use, but sometimes they stick open when you unplug the device, which defeats the purpose of having them. It's a matter of having them screwed on just the right amount; too little and they move around on the wall, too much and they stick open. The sideways slide ones are a little less ergonomic for me. My son managed to bypass both types before he reached his second birthday. If you're looking for the ultimate protection, the plates described above fit over these outlets so you can have covers both inside and outside the outlet. I've done this on several outlets and it gets expensive (about $7 total per outlet) but it's almost impossible for a child to get past it. Best of all, it's very simple for an adult to plug in a standard plug.
