Amazon.com Product Description
If you need a doorbell but are a little nervous about doing your own wiring, then wireless is the way to go. With Heath Zenith's wireless doorbell systems, all you need to do is mount the doorbell and the chime-no electrical installation is needed.

With the SL-6142-C, you get two push buttons so you can put one on the front and back doors. The chime is programmed with three different tunes: one- and two- note chimes and an eight-note Westminster chime. You can select from 128 code settings (which allow the doorbell to communicate with the chime) to make sure your neighbor's wireless systems don't set of your chime.

The batteries for the push buttons are included, along with all the mounting hardware you'll need. Note that you will have to supply three D batteries for the chime.--Josh Dettweiler

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite as Good as it Should Be   October 3, 2009
Warren Holzem (Oregon City, OR)
First off, I think they may have the wrong item pictured. Mine doesn't have round buttons, but rather has long buttons. And it's not bright white, but a softer ivory.

I bought this for use in my store for someone at the front counter to signal someone in the back room when additional help is needed out front. The buttons are only about 20 and 25 feet away from the chime, and while not quite line-of-sight, there is less solid stuff for the signal to pass through than a more typical situation of the button being on the outside of a house, and the chimes somewhere inside.

You have to firmly press and hold the button to activate the chime the first time you hit the button. If you press the button a second time after activating the chimes, that second press can be softer, and shorter, more like a typical press of a doorbell. It's as if you have to wait for the system to wake-up that first time.

In my case, the people pressing the button are aware of the shortcomings. They can also hear if the chime activates or not. In a more typical situation, a person ringing a doorbell doesn't know that this button needs to be more firmly pressed, and after pressing it, they don't get to hear whether or not it actually went off.

In fairness, I've checked-out numerous wireless doorbell systems, and most do not work well at all, either. If you can install a more traditional wired system, do so. Get a wireless one like this only if you can't wire anything up, and you're prepared to miss people at your door who don't press hard enough or long enough.

4 out of 5 stars Door chime dlivers   April 12, 2009

The HEath Zenith SL-6142-c is a cheap item which does its job almost flawlessly. Out of the box I installed and it worked: one battery included with the kit was dead (took me a few minutes switching batteries to figure this out). I had to change the settings on the main wired element because the bell would ring when my neighbor had a delivery, I guess has the same radio frequency on his bell... It was easy: unscrew one screw on the wired element (remove from wall of course), place the provided black cap on the jumper on #5, do the same for the puch button element and you are all set.
I would recommend this purchase.

1 out of 5 stars No stars for this one...   February 4, 2009

Blew up in less than 10 days. Smoke and all. To be fair, electricity in our country is pretty bad, but my house is setup with a number of protections (such as power inverters, for example). My guess is that the item does not take the pseudo-sinusoid wave produced by the inverter when no external power was available (most inverters produce a square wave that is different to that of the regular A/C current).

In any case... going back to a battery-operated unit.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed...   January 24, 2009

Heath Zenith SL-6142-C Basic Wireless Plug-In Door Chime with Two Transmitters, White
As a previous reviewer pointed out, the amazon.com product review was deceiving. Not only did it state misinformation about the D-batteries (but that's okay because I wanted a plug-in) but it also said this had 3 tones that included Westminster Chimes. This model only as TWO tones - a ding and a ding-dong. And the tones are tinny sounding. Also, the battery was dead that came with one of the pushbuttons, so I have to fork out for a new one and they're hard to find in a retail store because of their odd size.
Having said all that, this will work out for now as it was a temporary solution until I can get my wired doorbell fixed.
