great product with these instructions October 21, 2009 R. Ellis (boston) Great choice to save energy... the instructions are bad, but here's all you need... the three components: heat sensing switch (thermistor), speed control, and blower motor must be connected in series. I plugged the loose ends of cord provided into the speed control and into the blower motor and used the wires included to connect the speed control to the heat sensor and the heat sensor to the other side of the blower motor. The thermistor is mounted to threaded rod coming down near front right corner of fire-logs from the bottom of the firebox - use thermally conductive compound to ensure switching on/off most efficiently. The speed control mounts to same bracket that holds the control wiring for the thermostat, whose wiring is low voltage and must be kept electrically separate. once all set up and blower is installed to rear-center, plug the cord into an extension cord. adjust speed down to a reasonable audible level... any forced convection is much more efficient than free convection.. efficiency increases from estimated 50% to 85% with this blower installed properly. enjoy.
Good fan for gas fireplace March 28, 2009 Jersey Girl (Allenhurst, NJ) My family has a gas fireplace that emitted no heat, it all went up the chimney. We ordered this fan to remedy that. It works well, turning on automatically at a certain temperature and shuts off automatically after you shut off the fireplace and it has internally cooled. It is 'whisper' quiet when set low but you can definitely hear it when set high. For our needs the low setting has been more than adequate and we can definitely recommend the fan. I should note that when we received the fan, the motor did not work. We called the company and they overnighted a new unit and sent a prepaid box to send the old unit back. Excellent customer service!
Plastic blades distort and melt March 1, 2009 Joseph Curcio (Portland, ME) Although this blower started out as a very quiet and smooth running unit on my fireplace insert (as a direct replacement of the 20 year old unit originally installed), it failed within a few days. First, the thermal switch stopped working and needed to be removed in order to allow the blower to operate. Within a few days, the blower started to run loudly and eventually stopped entirely. The plastic impeller blades distorted from the heat of the fireplace and eventually could not spin inside the housing. I wish I hadn't thrown the old heavy duty metal unit out quite so quickly.
Quick and Easy, Very Good Product February 24, 2009 C. Asker (Pacific Northwest) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered my Blower and was a little skeptical since it was a universal fit for several products. If looked just like the one in the Heat and Glo manual so I went for it. I did my homework before ordering and noticed that several people had complained about the installation instructions so I spent some time reading the Heat and Glo installation procedures while I waited for deliver. Once my unit arrived, I noticed their instructions were the same as the one in my Heat and glow manual.
My fireplace had the correct junction box so it took me about 30 minutes form start to finish for installation. Basically, it was hook the wires up according to the schematic, slide the unit in place and I was done.
Tip:
While you are waiting for your unit to arrive study your owner's manual, look at your unit and familiarize yourself with your fireplace and its electrical connections. Determine where you will place the unit, the sensor, and control knob. My units already had locations set up for these items.
Pros:
Customer support: Friendly, Responsive
I actually ordered two but they only sent one, I called and they sent the other one out the next day and apologized for the inconvenience. Refreshingly hassle free.
Quality of the Product: Well made, Tight, Solid, Quality components
I am a Sr. Product Quality Engineer so I know a little about product quality.
Cons:
As of this writing none. I have had the units for about a month now and they work as expected. Now days that is great
Blower January 18, 2009 Life (Virginia) Works great, everything needed was in the box. Very quiet and produces lots of blown heat.
