Hurricane Gustav Tested and Approved September 5, 2008 R. Mayeux (Denham Springs, LA) I bought this lil' guy for LSU Tiger tailgating but unfortunately Hurricane Gustav has postponed any "game" action thus far. I caught grief in preperation from family as they all purchased larger generators prior to the storm. 11:OO AM Monday 9/1/08 we lose power....it's show time. Second crank and for the next 55 hours the TG1200 pretty much ran non-stop. It easily powered two fans, several lights, TV and satellite. Periodically I unplugged the fans and powered up the refrigerator. I only used about 7.5 gallons of gas too! Best $119.00 I ever spent!!!
Good unit September 1, 2008 Thomas H. Lawler (Everett, Wa) I thought at one point of trying to get a small engine and an old car alternator to make a small DC generator myself, but when I saw that a unit like this costs less than a small engine alone, I quickly changed my mind. I just got this and have had no problems on recieving it damaged or such. I tried it out and havn't had anything really unexpected. I only added ~1/3 gallon of gas (knowing I didn't want to run it for a real long time), but it ran for about 2 hours on that. I ran a 750W space heater on the 120V circuit for a good part of that time which it handled fine and a small fridge (each of those 1 at a time). I'm not sure I want to even try my full size fridge since the surge draw to start a lot of motors is easily over the 1200W surge limit (and it is rated 1000W continuous, the 1200 is a surge rating). It does run fairly quiet compared to some things with engines, but you'd still have to speak up a bit for someone to hear you while right next to it. It didn't bounce or walk around by itself from the vibrations, so it has been balanced well. I tried hooking up a small "jump start" battery to the DC connection and found it instantly was raising the voltage to ~18V, so it doesn't have any voltage regulation on that. Since I didn't want to overcharge the battery (which you are doing if you go over ~15V), I connected up a small heater that draws ~8 amps, but that instantly popped the circuit breaker for the DC output on the generator. So it seems you get a choice of allowing it to overcharge your battery or popping the breaker if you try to keep the voltage down by drawing enough power, neither of which are the ideal. Now to see if I can come up with some way to control either or both of those issues.
Eastern Tools 1200 Watt generator August 3, 2008 Mike D. Darnold (Oklahoma) I bought this unit to power a Jugs pitching machine. Jugs sells a 1000W generator manufactured by Yamaha for north of $700. This generator has worked perfectly at a fraction of the price. I am sure it is not the quality of the Yamaha but no more time than we put on the unit I expect many more seasons out of it.
Good if you can get it to work July 24, 2008 JTR (Connecticut) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The construction of this generator is as cheap as its price. I could not get it started out of the box. It turned out that the tie-in between the spark plug and the plug wire was a cheap coil that had two small flanges that poked into the plug wire through two small holes in the wire. This very insecure connection was loose. When I seated it correctly, the generator started, but its vibrations soon broke the connection. Fixing it was difficult because the connection tended to come loose most of the time when you slid the overly snug boot over the plug-coil-wire connection. You have to do this to avoid a potentially dangerous spark near the gas and/or a short. Any way, what I finally did was to use electrical tape to hold the coil wires in place where they went into the plug wire. Then I split the boot so I could get it around the connection without disturbing it and put electrical tap around the boot to suppress any stray spark. Since then it has worked fine, and for the money, is great. Paired with a 16 inch Black and Decker trimmer, it cut my time to trim bushes in half compared to having to run electrical chords all the way from the house. The bottom line is you get what you pay for. The machine is cheaply constructed, but it is a sixth of the price of a good small generator like a Honda. If you have the inclination and skills to tinker with it, it is a good deal. If you don't, it may give you no end of grief.
