Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
TED ,The Energy Detective, lets you know immediately how much electricity your home is consuming, how much money you spend on electricity each day, how much you have spent on electricity so far during the billing cycle, and much more. TED continuously monitors electricity consumption for the entire home, not just one appliance or circuit. With TED you will help conserve energy and save money. TED comes in three pieces: an attractive receiving display unit that plugs into any household outlet, a transmitting unit that is located inside the household circuit box, and two current transformers that clamp around incoming power lines. Installation should only be performed by a professional electrician or someone who is knowledgeable of household wiring.

4 out of 5 stars Save a watt and help the enviroment.   October 29, 2008

TED is the ultimate toy to keep track of your electrical bill. I also have the Kill-a-Watt, and compare both with a 100 watts bulb and nothing else connected to the house, both display 100 watts. I was impressed! I had a little trouble installing TED not because the installation is difficult but because one of the cable(phase A) did not have enough room to clamp the CT. Other than, it was fun installing it.

Most pictures you see on the Internet, look like TED has an illuminated display, but it has not. So keep this in mind. I wish TED had an illuminated display. I will try to hack TED on this.

I love the MATRIX display type. With this kind of display you will have less restriction of what you can read. Basically, you can display or read any characters, increase the fonts, etc. So far, TED is doing what was designed for, letting me know how much power and how much money I am using EVERY hour, and much more information.
The software is not that great. This is an Adobe Flash Player based graphic display. So forget it about dragging and resizing the graphic. The settings are not that flexible. The chart displays only two values: voltage and Kilo-watts-hour. I have not been able to use the data export, I contacted the manufacturer, but like most devices, who designed it is not the one providing the support.

UPDATE:

I have to admit that I rush writing my review about TED. This is why you should not buy TED yet unless they fixed some really bad issues. First of all, the remote unit installed in the breaker panel behaves very erratically, what I mean is that it transmits very intermittent. Some times for minutes it will not transmit any data at all! Wow! So during that time you don't have any data of the the power used in the house. I posted a couple videos in youtube, just search for raxxal and you will see what I am talking about.

I contacted the manufactures whom I believe is The Energy Detective, they sent me another display unit even though I told them the problem is at the transmitter, guess what? Same problem!
I contacted those guys again, this time I want to return TED, so far they have not responded.

The software is not that great, and you need the computer to be ON all the time to be able to re record the data.

So be aware of these issues. In my opinion TED needs more works!

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed, a misleading product....   October 14, 2008

I was really excited about getting TED but when it arrived, it was one disappointment after another. First let me talk about the good things.

THE GOOD

It installs very quickly, but most people will need an electrician; unless you feel comfortable working with live power in the panel box. Turning off breakers will not stop the electricity, that can only be done if the outside meter is removed. Even so I hooked up mine in ten minutes, but you have to be very careful.

Programming the TED is pretty easy; it just takes a calculator and a bit of math to figure out what numbers you need to punch in.

The unit is fairly accurate, I tried some known power sources and it read the changes in them going on and off with good accuracy.

THE BAD

1) First off the Display is absolutely horrible; it's like something from the 1980's. Even though the letters are big, the poor LCD contrast the lack of back lighting and the blocky form of the letters makes it hard to see the text unless you hold it at an exact angle.

2) My TED had no software and no manual! I had to go on their website to get both.

THE UGLY

1) TED stores no data in the unit! If you get a 1 second power outage the daily and monthly bill that it shows you will be erased and recaluculated using your current consumption at the moment the power resumes. Absolutely crazy!! For TED owners out there that don't believe me, look at what it is says is your monthly bill eg. $200 then plug it out and turn on the toaster or some other high power device. While the toaster is running plug back TED and in a few seconds you will see your monthly Bill rise to $400+.

2) Add insult to Injury you have to pay extra in order to unlock the unit so it can store data on your PC. An additional $44 is really petty just to use the software in its entirety. Shame on them for charging people for something that should be totaly free.

3) Of course ;) TED does NOT store its daily readings! It only stores today's amount and then calculates a running total for the month. You cannot go back and see what you used yesterday or the week before unless you connect it to a PC and have it log the data. When I purchased the TED I assumed based on the specifications that one could just plug it in at the end of the month, and that TED would dump all its daily stored data and I could graph it etc. but I found out that the unit wipes itself clean everyday and starts a fresh daily record. Hence for real functionality you need to pay an additional $44 so the PC can collect and Save the Info.

3) Lastly this to me is the most irritating and stupid part of the TED system. You need a PC to Log the Data! Now I am not a rocket scientist but isn't it kind of stupid to have an Energy Saving device that needs a PC to be connected 24/7 just so it can keep proper records! Oh well there goes most of the Energy Savings.

5 out of 5 stars At this price, every house should have one...   August 13, 2008

Having just installed this device, I'm really impressed by the quality and capability of this instrument. Unlike some of the other energy monitors with which you must plug an appliance into individually, this one monitors the entire house. It even has software available that plots usage in many different formats on your computer. The price is very reasonable.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful information   January 28, 2008

If you are working to make your home energy efficient, this meter provides great information about how much power your home is using. Switch something on and you can see the power consumption go up. Examples include: ceiling fan - 20 watts; whole house fan - 270 watts; inefficient old heat pump - yikes!

This information was very helpful in my household to help us become more educated about the amount of power our appliances use. You can program your local electrical rate into the meter as well, and it will keep track of both the number of kilowatt hours used, and the associated cost.
