| | The Energy Saver Series Power Monitor is easy to install and easy to use. View full diagram. | Click to view the power monitor compatibility guide. | Simple Installation: No Wiring Required Getting started is as easy as mounting the sensor to your outdoor electric meter, aligning it, and synchronizing the sensor with the cordless monitor. Once this is done, you can track real-time usage from a convenient, indoor location. The results are immediately available and can help you to make smart energy-consumption choices. You'll quickly discover that doing the little things really does add up to big savings. The monitor's easy-to-read digital display shows your current energy usage in dollars, so you don't have to perform tricky calculations to understand what the readings mean. It also shows you the outdoor temperature, so you can account for heat used on cold mornings, and it displays your month-to-date usage along with an estimate for your upcoming bill. This advanced feature can work with any type of billing rate, including flat rate billing, separate peak and off-peak rates, or tiered billing structures. Track Little Changes that Become Big Savings A convenient appliance mode feature allows you to track minute-to-minute changes in electric consumption as major appliances are turned on and off, so you can see where your money is going. This makes it easy for you to decide, for instance, which electrical appliances and accessories are really worth their cost, and which of your older appliances are costing you more money than they're worth. You can also quickly tell how much you save by switching to compact florescent light bulbs or instituting other conservation measures in your home. Once you have the Energy Saver Series Power Monitor set up, you'll be surprised how quickly the everyday choices you make in your electrical consumption add up. In fact, lifestyle changes based on the information your family gets from this monitor can save you up to 20 percent a month on your electric bills. Enjoy Durability and Widespread Compatibility The weatherproof sensor at the heart of this system is designed to handle tough winters, humid summers, and everything in between, so you can rely on it for year-round accurate performance. This power monitor is designed to work with 90 percent of current electricity meters, including those with visible rotating wheels, those with single optical ports, and some models with dual optical ports. What's in the Box Cordless monitor station, weatherproof sensor, one shim, and one alignment guide. | |

Do Not Buy This Without Checking Your Meter, First!! November 19, 2009 Molly J. Graham (Arcadia, CA USA) I saw a segment on the Today Show for this product and was pretty excited about being able to measure the power used by my electronics and appliances. Unfortunately, that segement featured only the hand-held power monitor (the device that is about the size of a remote control). What I did not realize is that the hand-held unit works only after you strap a monitor on your electric meter located outside your home. The power monitor works with many types of meters but WILL NOT WORK if you do not have a compatible meter. (And for starters, if your meter is not round, it's definitely not compatible.) I discovered this only after I opened the box. Unfortunately, I had to tear the box in order to open it. So I am left with a power monitor I cannot use and cannot even return for a decent refund (50% under Amazon's policy) because I tore the box. The Amazon posting should contain a warning at the top of the page that tells purchasers to check their meter type for compatibility before buying. If it had, I'd have paused and then checked. Instead, I wasted $92. This is really the first disappointing Amazon experience I've ever had.
Nice concept, wireless not dependable October 14, 2009 R. Davis (San Jose, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found the unit reasonable to install and program - I live in an area with tiered rates and I have a time-of-use meter, so I just programmed it for an average rate based on my recent bills for both time-of-use periods, which should get me in the cost ballpark. However, the transmitter/receiver could not stay in contact, even if I hung the receiver about four feet away from the transmitter on the inside wall directly inside from the transmitter - less than 20 minutes after I wake it up to get in contact, it would go to "sleep" again - and, when it is in "sleep" mode, it does not gather any data. As such, and as the transmitter that is mounted on the meter evidently does no cumulative reporting - it evidently just transmits instantaneous usage - all data that would have been gathered during times that the receiver was in "sleep" mode is lost, I would get no data, and thus the cumulative cost and power functions (which is more than half of the reason I purchased the unit) is useless. I tried re-syncing the unit a number of times, replacing both receiver and transmitter batteries (although the batteries were each reading 1.6 V before installation; indicating new batteries to me), and no joy. The B&D web site had no useful information on such problems (despite other reviews that seemed to indicate there was a way to get it to work on a different frequency, I never found this clue). As such, I'm guessing that the radio noise/traffic in my area is too much for the unit. In conclusion, it seems to be a good unit with a pretty good execution method but with the vulnerability any wireless device has of not working. At least Amazon's return policy is decent and pays for the return shipping, and the unit was worth a try.
Helped me save $100/mth October 13, 2009 N. Laput (CT) I bought this monitor to help me figure out why my electric bill had doubled. Within an hour after setting it up, I found the problem spot. Honestly, I can't ask for more - it paid for itself in the first month. NOTE: I have a meter type that is listed as "Not compatible" - the rotating wheel not visible from the front. It took a bit of fiddling, but since the edge of my wheel WAS visible from the side I was able to install it so that the sensor picked up the wheel anyway. I am 100% satisfied with this purchase.
now more energy aware October 7, 2009 Bo (Port Neches,Texas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this after shopping around, would have given it a 5* if the monitor panel lit up, I have a little trouble paying attention to it at night unless the light is shining right on it. I do like it, it was easy to setup on the meter and also easy to setup the monitor itself.(just for silly, I am a woman, so you don't have to wait for your husband to set this up) I wish there was some way to sync it so when the meter is read it would reset, but for an energy monitor and the awareness of what's going on and what runs up the bill, this was just what I needed. I now know it costs more for my electric H/W heater to run than the central A/C unit, oven or even the clothes dryer.(that made me go out in the utility room and turn down the thermostat from all the way on full at 150* to 120* and put the H/W heater insulating blanket that was still in the package in the garage on the H/W heater) It also shows that rooms in the house that DON'T have CFL lightbulbs cause the reading to go up significantly, and the rooms with CFL lightbulbs, well they hardly register. So if your trying to prove something to yourself or others in the house this will do the trick. It's not that I am not using any more or less power on the things I need to use, but it is helping me conserve and reduce my carbon footprint and the awareness of what is using the power and what it costs to use it wisely. This was a good buy.
Great simple to use product September 15, 2009 zoltan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this item to help see where all the electricity we were using was going. Received it quickly and had it installed and running in about an hour. Works great, although the resolution is limited to 100 watts immediate use. My older house has a mechanical type meter, with just 110v (what an electrician once called a "two wire" system, once he stopped laughing). I had some concern that it might not work on this older house, but it works fine.
Over time it seems very accurate. It lets you see exactly how much energy various appliances and machines are using, with the "tare" feature you can isolate just one item. I was shocked how many watts my tiny microwave used!
To get the item set up correctly takes careful reading of the instructions, but is not beyond even an ADHD case like me. It will even track your usage in dollars, although I don't find that very useful.
One thing - after installing you need to reset both the sender and the home base - I'm surprised it didn't automatically pick up. The hint to do this was buried in troubleshooting advice at the back of the manual.
Also - it has an outside temperature reading, but no inside. It's a shame they didn't put both temps on there.
The information from the unit is interesting, and it could be helpful if you have some real power hogs in your system, as far a minimizing your energy use. I find with my minimal use I can't really cut back much - although it will remind me if I leave a fan on somewhere. My usual continuous wattage is from 300 to 700 watts - although at the lower level I think I run into that low power resolution problem.
It's a great toy, and useful as well!
