Disappointment! November 23, 2009 Thomas J. Deimling (Beaverton, Or USA) I was looking forward to utilizing the INTERNET capabilities of my new Sony BDP-N460 but had to wait until my birthday to give the wireless bridge a try. Waste of time and money. The setup disk didn't provide the correct settings bu the Sony setup through the Blueray player was a snap. But, the signal strength was so poor that it wouldn't connect. Using my wife's laptop the same distance from the router worked fine. Not acceptable performance. It's going back to the store tomorrow.
It might work better for you... but maybe wireless is not the answer November 22, 2009 Robert P. Krajewski I recently bought the LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player from Amazon, and since we don't have Ethernet in the living room, decided to hook it up to our network using this device. We already have an Apple TV that works well on the wireless network (N standard, using the latest Apple Airport base station), so I figured this would work well - both the Airport and the WET610N are dual-band N devices.
If you're in a Mac-only household, don't bother with the Quick Start guide and the installation Wizard, which is Windows-only; instead, you should follow the manual setup directions in the full user guide (which appears to be online only, or on the CD).
It seems to work well at first, but then it kept on disconnecting. Looking at the Linksys support boards for the product, I tried updating the firmware (which supposedly fixed some problems about disconnection when the machine had been on for while): again, at first, success, then disconnection after 20 minutes. Then I reset the device to its factory settings, reconfigured, and this time it lasted about forty minutes. That was it for me.
According the Linksys support boards, the problem might be that the WET610N disconnects whenever a base station that is set to WPA2 (or WPA2 Personal) security changes the security keys. On an Apple Airport, this happens every hour by default. Some people had better results they turned off security or used the very weak WEP security, but Verizon discourages its customers from running totally open wireless networks, and the Airport does not offer WEP anyway.
So if you've got a different setup (like not running a secure wireless network), this still might be right for you. However, if want Ethernet for a device like a BD player, you might want to consider Powerline (Ethernet over your house's AC power), or if you're a Verizon FIOS customer like me who has coax in living room for TV, this device: Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter - Single, because your FIOS network router is connected to your TV coax cable. You might need a splitter for sharing the coax connection with your TV's set top box and the MoCA adapter, but this seems like most solid option for my particular case.
Terrible reliability November 19, 2009 The Fixer (Fairfax, VA) It configures fine and runs fine initially (Hulu looks fantastic), but leave it unplugged or unused for a few days, and it can no longer connect to the web. All the lights are flashing, indicating that it is connected to the network, and I can access its configuration page, but my Sony Bravia can't connect to the Internet. I basically have to refresh the configuration to get it working for another brief interval. The firmware update (.03) did not fix the problem. I used to be a Linksys diehard from the good ol' 802.11b days (my BEFW11 ran rock solid for years) but between their abandonment of the WRT600N and now this unreliable bridge, I'm done with them.
Good bridge November 16, 2009 R. Chaves (Cincinnati, OH) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Took a bit to set up with my linksys wireless g but after a 20 minute call with the Cisco help desk, we got the thing to work. The good thing is that once it s set up, it needs nothing else, it just works.
Cisco WET610N Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge with Dual-Band November 15, 2009 SalAhGin (Redondo Beach, CA) I bought this based on having tried out my neighbor's WET54g and liking it. Went with the 610n because of its support for dual band. Initially I regretted it when I had trouble with the setup, but once I got over it I am very happy with the product.
