3 out of 5 stars It's just ok   January 6, 2009

I got this humdifier because I'm replacing one that I broke at work. I got this same one again for continuity's sake, and it's a good price. The humidifier tank is pretty weak. Bump it, barely drop it, anything, and it cracks easily. The tanks are on backorder from the manufacturer, or I'd just get a new one of those. I think there are a lot better humidifiers out there that aren't so easy to break.

1 out of 5 stars Never worked right and very difficult to fill the reservoir.   December 7, 2008

I would never buy another Holmes product. They are poorly designed, do not work properly, the reservoirs are difficult to fill and Holmes customer service is non-existent. I have made the mistake of buying a number of Holmes products including this Humidifier.
The Humidifier has never worked correctly and sometimes will cycle on/off/on a half-dozen or more times before it stays on. Holmes answer was that I should turn up the setting to a higher value.
The Reservoir is difficult to fill as there is no handle, then it is difficult to put the cover on it because it will not stand upside down, you have to try to hold it with one hand and screw the cover on with the other. I have already broken one reservoir.
The Humidifier is also quite noisy on all but the lowest setting. The only way you can have it on a higher fan speed setting is if you are not going to be in the room.
Very disappointing Humidifier and Strongly Not Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Relatively quiet, effective and will not run on high setting   December 6, 2008
Go-Hawkeyes (Pennsylvania)
I bought the humidifier for use beginning last year (2007).
It worked fine all winter and I followed intructions to store it until next needed.
When I installed a new filter and started it this year, I discovered it will not run on the high settings - A3 or 3. It tries, but the fan blades just move very slowly and the electric motor sounds like it's straining.

I'm not sure about the A2 and 2 settings because it works fine on A1 for me. I use mine primarily at night, so A1 is all that I want.

Don't know if it would be covered by warranty, but since it is serving my purpose, I'm not going to spend my time that way.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Design Flaw   November 20, 2008

As some of the other reviewers noted, the water tank on this humidifier is very difficult to fill. You'll see it has a large handle on the top, but you'll only use this when the tank is empty. It is filled from the bottom, which has no handle, much less any ridge to hold on to. The tank will not stand upside-down. Also, because the tank is so long, the only place I could fill it is in a bathtub.

Screwing on the lid of a large, wet, heavy plastic tank in the bathtub with two hands is near impossible. I dropped it, the tank shattered, and now I need to get a new humidifier. Save yourself the trouble and move on.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as it looks   November 7, 2008

OK, this design had real potential, but the product was so noisy that I could not sleep with in my room! But, it got much worse.

This humidifier really did perform well - I put it in my Master bedroom (17x17) and it quickly brought up the room humidity to about 40%, but it was not able to get to 50%, where I had it set, but some times it got up to 45%.

But, it was so loud that it continued to wake up myself and my wife. The fan it the problem. It's a large diameter fan, which means it should work well at low speed. But, it makes noises that were very annoying at night.

So, I finally turned it off. Interestingly, the filters continue to soak up water and let it evaporate, so it works, even without being turned on. Well, that was good for a while, until the filter pads got moldy, and then it made me sick (I'm allergic to mold more than anything else!).

I did note that the manual tell you to clean it out EVERY WEEK !!?

Really, who's going to do that?

And, using an antibacterial solution and soap?

Well, the unit comes apart easily and cleaning it was no problem, just a little mess if the tank still has water in it. You need to work on it in the shower or kitchen sink. The bad part are the filter pads. They are a paper like material that I have only seen in baby diapers, with a nylon net around them. And, they don't hold up in the washing process for very long.

I dunked them in Clorox solution (1 cup per gallon) and the paper part simple disolved, so I had to throw them away.

But, wait, the fun part was trying to find replacement filters!

When I bought the product, mine was banded by BIONAIRE (model BCM630 - look familiar). They quickly took it off there web site last year and they don't sell replacement filters (HWF100P)!

So, I did hunt them down and they were $30 for a set of 6 (it takes two at a time).

So, I think it's well worth the price listed her, but I would not plan on running it at night, or at least, not in your bedroom. But, you can get the same effect by hanging out a wet towel and blowing a fan on it.

What shocked me, however, was pulling out the two diaper like filters and seeing them covered with black and gray mold, which was given me a killer headache for weeks, before I discovered.

If you buy this and use it, plan on cleaning it often!!!
