View larger. | Innovative Technology for Quick, Reliable Deployment The FAST Draw relies on Forward Action Spring Technology, or F.A.S.T., that was designed exclusively for Gerber and patented by famed Oregon knife maker Butch Vallotton. Butch is known as "Mr. Mechanism" in the custom-knife world, a tribute to his unique designs and exceptional understanding of opening and locking mechanisms. This new, proprietary blade opening concept means that you can deploy your knife quickly and easily using just one hand.Of course, when a job calls for more deliberate actions, you can also open this knife in the traditional way, using the thumb stud. This is the closest you can get to a street legal switch-blade. Convenient, Safe, and Dependable Over Time A sharp knife is not only more useful than a dull knife, it's also safer to use. With a strong, sharp blade, you can make the cuts you want quickly and efficiently. That's why Gerber uses a high-carbon stainless steel blade on the FAST Draw. This large, 2.99-inch blade offers a fine-edged cutting surface that can easily be sharpened using standard methods. FAST Draw is the first in a series of knives utilizing "Fast Technonogy." Others include the Mini-Fast, Draw, Aluminum Presto 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, Vallotton, PR2.5 and PR3.0, Convert Fast, Mini Convert Fast, Answer 3.25, Tanto and Drop Point F.A.S.T. This drop point blade, which is stronger than the clip-point style blades used on many pocket knives, fits neatly in the handle when not in use, so you don't have to worry about damaging it or hurting yourself. The knife is precisely balanced to sit comfortably in your hand and features a glass-filled nylon handle for strength and durability. Texturing on the handle surface ensures a secure grip for improved control. At just 3.6 ounces, the slim FAST Draw knife is light enough to take with you anywhere. And with the included sturdy pocket clip, you always know right where your knife is. Gerber's History of Ingenuity Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.For more than half a century, Gerber Legendary Blades has been helping people fend for themselves. Gerber designs popular, dependable tools and knives along with other outdoor gear that helps users accomplish whatever tasks they may be faced with, promoting the lost art of self-reliance. Best Designed Knife Currently Available December 17, 2008 Amazonian 2082 (Dreary Ohio) This knife is designed perfectly. The safety is a much needed feature to prevent the knife from opening in your pocket. The button for the safety is ergonomically located so you can unlock the knife with your thumb and then more right to the thumb knob to FAST open it. The hook to hook this knife on your pocked is located at the pointed end of the knife when it's folded. This is also very important if you carry it in your right pocked because if the knife accidentally opened it would open outward instead of inward towards your leg. I own the serrated version and would recomend it vs non serrated. I've needed the serrated feature more than I've needed a longer non serrated blade area. The only downside to this knife is the outer sheath is PLASTIC. What were they thinking?!? I would gladly pay an extra $25 to have solid steel. This is why I rated it 4 stars vs 5. In the next version I would expect all steel and maybe some additional tools like a flat head screwdriver that would not increase the size of the knife. Until that happens this is the best designed knife available.
Does pretty much everything you could hope it could do November 14, 2008 C. Carpenter (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would easily recommend this knife to anybody who thinks it would be nice to have. The opening mechanism is slick and effective without coming off as automatically scary or threatening when used sensibly. I think this knife could be considered a good safety item for someone that spends a lot of time in a boat, air plane, or pretty much any vehicle. If you are ever caught in a situation where you only have one hand/arm available and you need to cut something, like if you were in an accident and needed to cut a seatbelt off but its holding down one arm, this would be the knife to have, and its small enough to always be near and not take up a lot of space or add a lot of weight. The one thing keeping this knife from getting 5 stars, and it is kind of a big one is that it is easily possible for the knife to open when the lock is in place, its more like a spring off button then a true lock. Compounding this problem is that once the knife opens enough the lock is disengaged and the knife is "fully loaded" and ready to spring back open at any time.

Not the prettiest knife I've ever owned March 8, 2008 Steven Denbo (Spokane, Washington United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was a little disappointed about the sharpness out of the box. A couple of swipes on a sharpening steel changed all that. Like I said, this is not the prettiest knife I've ever owned but it just shouts efficient tool. If you're right handed. I am and everything is right where it should be. With a little practice, the time from pocket to use is a matter of a second. The blade is substantial and sturdy, I've used mine for anything from chipping ice to slicing up pork ribs. Steve
Matched set February 29, 2008 Geoffrey F. Beneze (Tempe, AZ USA) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought the Mini quick draw first and was so impressed with it's feel and function that I bought it's big brother and I can say that I was not disappointed. Gerber sends excellently sharpened blades from the factory. With only minor honing and polishing, this knife takes a truly frighteningly sharp edge and holds it for a very long time. The workings are a bit slower than the Mini due to the greater mass in the Quick Draw (Sr.) blade. One of the complaints I've consistently read for both models of these knives is that they "can open in your pocket." I believe this to be Liberalistic Chicken Little'ism rather than any factual based experience. Both blades must be opened approximately 30 degrees before they'll spring and there is a distinct CLICK in the locking mechanism JUST before this point is reached. Certainly, one must be cautious with such an implement, but we do not need to create the impression of danger where there is none and only nominal "common sense" is required for safe function.
