Mostly a project book November 17, 2009 L. Ballard (Utah) Let me save you a few bucks. This tells you to how to set up your tool rest and then practice using your tools. That's it. The rest of the book is projects. They spend a ton of the book on using burls to make bowls. There has to be a better instructional manual out there. I learned a lot more just surfing the web for free.
technique yes - choosing a lathe no November 11, 2009 F. Kirk (Atlanta, GA) An interesting book that falls a little short on organization and will not help you pick out a lathe. As far as the discussion on technique, I see some ambiguity here. It would probably be better to shop for a DVD if you are looking for guidance on how to hold the tools, mount a piece of wood, etc.
Excellent introductory book November 9, 2009 Geoffrey A Briggs The perfect book for those who are beginners or returning to lathe work from years past. Especially good for tool use and sharpening. Detailed color photos and diagrams provide well organized instruction along with information on wood sources and sample projects.
Excellent book for entry level persons November 1, 2009 Adrian J. Shank This easy to read book is ideal for someone just learning woodturning, like myself. It is an easy read, is well indexed, and following the basics of woodturning, it is indexed by project type. An excellent reference manual, and nicely illustrated.
Good book, but not everything you need to get turning well... May 2, 2009 David Hostetler (League City, Texas U.S.A.) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is enough to give you a fair idea of how to do woodturning. And I am learning a lot from it. But then again, I am learning from watching the JET Shopclass Series videos online, as well as doing projects with the guys at my local woodturning club. I rate it a 3 only because I think somebody might think a rating of 5 would mean this book is all you need to learn.
Simply put, this book is simply one of the resources you will want to dig into as you start woodturning.
