Product Description
Contemporary designs and unique materials come together in this expanded book of projects, ideas, and shop talk for turning out fine writing implements. Six projects from the original edition are joined by new pens, more troubleshooting, and new materials geared toward experimenting with new media as well as making the most out of small pieces of stock. An expanded basics section offers new information on tools and adhesives and a section on sharpening will keep the blades of more experienced turners honed. Fine finishes—from snake skin to 24-karat gold—are also explained, as are other embellishments such as laser engraving and plastic inserts. A seller's section with marketing advice and a gallery of inspiring samples make this collection of functional art a valuable addition to the workshop.

Great book April 11, 2009 C. Mitchell This is a good book for both the beginning pen turner and the pen turner looking to expand their abilities. If you do your own laminations you probably don't need this.
This book has easy to understand instructions to get a novice started pen turning. Once mastering the basics, this book then gives detailed ideas/instructions on how to make advanced pens including some stunning home laminations.
I thought that home lamination would be a problem, but with careful attention to detail, cyanoacrylic glue and accellerator it is a simple and quick process that leads to stunning results.
Beautiful photographs, superficial information March 28, 2009 Alan R. Soddy (Missouri) I found this publication to be more of a "coffee table" book than a practical teaching guide. I was hoping for greater instruction on the specific steps in the process of making pens. Although the book does outline the basics to pen turning, I found the instructions and corresponding photos to be general and repetitive. Instead of offering various techiques, this book seemed to repeat the same instructions and photographs for all the various styles. For example, how is the construction of a fountain pen different from a ballpoint? I wanted more than a pretty book; I wanted an extensive guide to pen turning. In that regard, the book was a disappointment.
How to???? January 13, 2009 Zopa (Colorado) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This may be as much a criticism of all "how to" books as this one, but non-the-less applicable... They never seem to be able to decide who their audience is... (biginner, novice, experienced or professional)or they try to address them all, its really annoying. This book (given the availability of this type of book) may be the best (easily found), but I found it necessary to use a number of different resources to obtain enough information about related issues to be able to get off the ground in pen making. All this other research could be seen as just additional FUN for many of us but for the book to represent it self as one thing and turn out to be another is really short-sighted and un-necessary...
Very useful and easy to follow December 21, 2008 S. Barrale (St. Louis Mo.) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the third pen turning book I have purchased. This is much better than the others. It is easy to follow and very useful. I refer to it often for ideas and techniques.
I recommend it highly..
