Useful tool for small projects January 5, 2009 woscar (LA United States) I recently purchased this after trying to cut some small white oak moldings with my table saw. I didn't have a fine enough blade for my power miter box and my old Craftsman miterbox with a 26" back saw was too large to fool with. There was no safe way to cut these moldings with the power saws because they were too short. This little miter box did the trick just fine. I also liked the unique clamping system pretty well, although the pieces were of insuffient length to use more than one clamp. I simply used my hand to hold it more firmly.
I like the front ledge that helps keep the box in place on the edge of a bench or table. If I were planning to use it on the floor, I'd screw it to a section of 2"x8" so I could hold it with my knee. I wouldn't recommend this box for cutting flooring or large moldings though. My other miter saws are better suited to that. I agree the plastic is a bit flimsy and the saw isn't as good as my other back saws, but it's a good value and handy for small jobs.
Useful and Cheap July 10, 2008 Richard Thornhill (Tacoma WA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have many, many saws and several mitre boxes. Although this my least expensive one I find I use this nifty little combination quite frequently.
No, I wouldn't use it for cabinet work, but when I need to do a quick job I find the cam operated clamps and the lip that holds it against the edge of a workbench a real boon. I used it this afternoon while building a chicken coop. I'd buy it for the cams alone and am thinking it might be worth drilling holes in the base of a better quality wood constructed box to use these useful little chaps. On the downside it is flimsy and there is too much slop for a high degree of accuracy, but for the money it really has its uses. Weigh up what for you want to use it; read some of the other reviews and you may decide it's for you!
You're better off eyeballing the cuts January 29, 2008 Michael Hardt (Chicago, IL) There's way too much play in the slots. The slots are too wide. The saw, when fully inserted into the slots, can still tilt on multiples axes, so your cut ends up being as straight as you hold it. Also there's a lot of play in the plastic itself--it bends.
It doesn't sit on a flat surface. The plastic cuts. The saw is what you would expect of a freebie thrown in. A disappointment in every respect.
Depends on what you're using it for May 14, 2007 Gavin Black 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall this a decent mid-sized backsaw if that's what you need. It's alot simpler to use than a full fledged mitre saw(Motorized or otherwise), since you don't have to set up the angles or anything. Very good for making quick cuts. The clamping is also very good but I thought it was a tad confusing the first time(You have to rotate the pegs so they face the wood). Obviously this won't handle large pieces of wood since it's a tenon saw, and you can forget about hardwood, it's just not designed for it.
Overall for the $15 I paid for it I'm satisfied. I got a decent clamp for longer boards, and an easy and accurate way to cut softwood boards, which is what I needed.
Pretty good mitre box May 6, 2007 P. Wade (Tennessee) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The clamping feature is very nice. It holds the wood securely. It still just feels a little cheap. I would pay more for something a bit more solid if there was one, but I couldn't find one.
