4 out of 5 stars Great Value for Money   March 16, 2007

For an affordable, entry-level chisel, you can hardly do better than the Irwin Blue Chip chisels. The poly handles are durable enough to withstand hammer blows, though you should get in the habit of hitting chisels only with a wood or rawhide mallet. They take an edge well, and the edge holds up for a reasonably long time in soft woods--working hard woods, the chisels will require more frequent sharpening. However, they will require some work out of the box. The backs may need a little flattening on a coarse whetstone, or on sandpaper glued to a hard, flat surface (like plate glass or a belt sander paten), and as with all new chisels, they will require sharpening before use. These chisels are pretty comfortable to use, though the handle is a little big for the ¼", making that size a little awkward to use. (One reviewer below mentioned that there was a significant gap between the handle and blade---that is probably a manufacturing defect. I would have immediately returned the defective chisel for a replacement!) My advice is to get the set of 4, which includes the most often used sizes. You can add others singly as you need them, or upgrade to a better set later. But for the price (and Amazon usually has the best price), it's hard to beat these chisels.

2 out of 5 stars Poor fit and finish, ok for crude work   January 13, 2007

I bought these thinking I'd use them as an upgrade to my old stanley 3 chisel set. I would say these are not an upgrade. These chisels are probably fine, probably good chisels. But... the fit and finish of the handles and the handles to the blades is terrible. There is a significant gap where the plastic handle is molded around the shank. The flash on the handle is some of the worse I've seen. I had to come around with a knife and clean up the ridge of flash and stump of the sprue. The factory edge is nothing to be impressed about. The edges were rolled on two of the four. I realize these are cheap chisels, and probably fine but they do not convey a feeling of quality. I am comparing these to my Stanley and Crown sets, the Stanleys were cheaper, the Crowns more expensive.

4 out of 5 stars a solid tool at an attractive price.   March 18, 2006

More for the handy everyman than the fine furniture maker, these chisels nonetheless merit recommendation because of their utility and very reasonable pricing. The blades cut through red oak for a door jamb installation with no noticeable wear. The range of sizes only adds to the overall value

Even if you have a top flight set of chisels, the Irwins would be worthwhile for use in more mundane jobs.

3 out of 5 stars I may never get these flat!   January 30, 2006

Every chisel in this price range will probably take some work but these are taking a lot more than I bargained for. I've lapped and honed the backs of these chisels for at least two hours trying to get them flat. I can live with them now but there are still several spots on all four of them that I didn't get true; The worst spot on the 1" was right on the tip. Based on Marples pre-Irwin reputation, I'm hoping these chisels will redeem themselves enough with use to justify the price, but they definitely cost more than I was expecting. If you equate your time to money, add at least two hours worth to the price listed.

Edit to add: After posting that review I cut a small notch in some plastic with the 1/4" using light taps from a wooden mallet - Believe it or not, it chipped. Back to the stone...
