 Ok, but not for splitting hardwood November 5, 2009

I agree with most that this is a decent hatchet, light handle and the blade could be harder. It certainly doesn't have the heft or leverage to really split hardwood though. It is handy if you need to notch wood, or cut small limbs off a tree, but keep it away from anything that can dull the blade.

This hand ax came razor sharp from the manufacture and has held an edge in light use so far. At 14" long it's a big hand ax and despite it's lightweight feels good in the hand. It is better suited for cutting than splitting with its blade's profile. The back end makes short work of tent stakes.

These axes are amazing, they cut trees down in fractions of the time others do, i used them for my eagle project where we had to gut out 600 sq yards of dense brush and trees, and it took less than 200 hours with alot of little kids workingwith them. They are comfortable, and work perfect. This is by far the best axe/hatchet i have ever seen. period.

the head on this axe is so stupidly tiny its a JOKE. This would be an appropriate axe for a 2 ft
midget. If you want to make kindling, forget it. You want a head that is twice as big as this.

With much anticipation, I finally received this hatchet just days before leaving to go on a short three day camping trip. I thought that I had packed everything that I had needed, but I was short an electric grinding wheel to sharpen the blade. The first few strikes split kindling with ease. Nothing too surprising, the wood that I was using was quite well aged. Unfortunately, after only a few cuts I started noticing two things. One, the plastic that was wrapped around the blade had started collecting shards of wood that had been driven up under it and had begun to start small cracks. Two, the blade started to get noticeable nicks. Closer examination revealed that they were not just chips, rather they were notches formed by the blade literally folding backwards on itself. as far as 1/16th of an inch. Naturally this quickly got much worse as the work continued until, even before the first fire, the hatchet preformed no better then a hatchet one might have purchased at a discount store. (Maybe even worse) I am so disappointed with this, I haven't even gotten the desire to return it. I had really expected so much more and to not even get a product that was mediocre was disheartening at the very least.
