5 out of 5 stars An indispensable piece of equipment for any real outdoorsman!   November 19, 2009
R. Zamudio (Texas)
This is one piece of gear I won't enter the wilderness without. My essential backpacking gear list now reads: Tent, bag, water filter, food, firesteel, Gerber axe.

Prior to buying this axe, I was using a cheapie Wal-Mart camp axe that never held an edge no matter how well you treated it and rusted within hours if it came in contact with any moisture. The cheapie also made a better hammer than an axe because it would painfully beat trees down rather than cutting them down, and it turned my arm into a useless appendage for a couple days while I recovered from overexertion. Eventually, I just stopped bringing it altogether and stuck to hunting around the forest for perfect-sized campfire wood, as it required less time and effort than bludgeoning wood with a chunk of cheap, heavy, blunt, rusty metal.

The Gerber camp axe (actually made by Fiskars, the king of quality scissors) is definitely a "more bang for the buck" item. Cutting firewood to size at camp is effortless, as the axe feels light to the arm, but still makes the woodchips fly. This model that I am reviewing is the one I settled on at the store because (for me) it offered the best balance of portability and function. I am sure the larger models are even better at felling dead trees and splitting logs, but the weight difference between models is significant. This one is small enough to strap to a pack, but still gets the job done with considerable ease while setting up camp. Speaking of balance, this thing is nicely-balanced to instill confidence in your swings and you would think that the handle is made of some exotic wood rather than hollow plastic. I was uneasy about the handle being plastic in the first place, and hollow to boot, but after using this on several trips now I am certain that Gerber wasn't exaggerating about the handle being "unbreakable".

The sheath is a real bonus, and I can't believe it is included with the axe. Nowadays, I would expect accessories like this to be sold as a separate item at a ridiculous price. I really like the sheath, as it makes solo woodgathering less of a pain. When used on a belt, it keeps the axe nicely at your side, freeing up both hands up to pull the log you just cut back to your campsite. It is also necessary equipment since you can put a very nice edge on this axe that would slice through the gear in your backpack while you hiked without a sheath.

I could go on and on about this thing, but I really think what I should do to get my point across is to make a video of this axe in action.

5 out of 5 stars great simple axe   October 24, 2009
Joseph Kubacz (breckenridge CO)
This axe came just how I expected. It is a simple, but solid design with the head and the handle feeling like they are one piece, very sturdy. The sheath is nice too--also simple yet very rugged and seems durable. I've been chopping around the house for a couple weeks now and the blade is still very sharp and none of the finish has been damaged on the head. I like how light the whole thing is and despite the hollow (and fairly thin-walled) handle it feels as described, unbreakable, and it has good control and response. After purchasing I nearly regretted not choosing the one with the saw blade inside the handle, but I have come to be very happy with the one I chose.

3 out of 5 stars Decent axe but it doesn't feel right   September 11, 2009

I ordered this as a replacement for a traditional wooden handled hatchet that I sharpened incorrectly on a high speed grinder. My new Gerber came very sharp and held the edge through a 5 day camping trip even after grounding it in the dirt multiple times. I think it is a good value but I didn't like the "feel" of it. The plastic handle is very sturdy but I never got used to the balance. I also had a problem with the sheath that came with it. It doesn't seem to be made for the hatchet and the velcro closure won't allow you to fully close. The hatchet doesn't stay secure in the pocket of the sheath and when I ripped open the velcro the bottom of the blade edge ripped across my cuticle. Cuts and bruises are part of a camping trip but I felt like the cause was the sheath design and not my carelessness. I don't regret my purchase but I think I am going to purchase a forged metal hatched with a leather wrapped handle and just keep this one in the garage for occasional home use.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Axe   June 28, 2009
R. Kraemer (MN)
I bought this axe to go to the Boundry Waters with some friends being that I've had good luck with Gerber in the past i decided to keep going with it and get the Gerber Camp Axe. It could not be a better tool me and my friends beat the crap out of it and did things that probably should have broke it other then a few chips off of the blade from trying to cut rocks with it...stupid friends its in mint condition.

5 out of 5 stars Well Balenced work of Art   March 25, 2009
G. Kaiser (Wisconsin)
I enjoy gathering my own fire wood. This thing does the trick. It is not too heavy or too big to carry comfortably- and yet, it is easy to use. It feels natural to cut into a piece of dead wood with this work of art.
I have used other hand axes before that slip out of the hand or make me worry that the blade will detatch from the handle.

I tell you what; it is worth spending a little extra money to get this axe that will last and will work well if you plan on doing more than one or two camping trips. If not, get a cheap little one and then get a nice first-aid kit incase you cut off your arm.

ONE NOTE: It didn't come very sharp! Don't buy this a day before you go somewhere... you might be sad when the wood doesn't split like a piece of hair that you haven't shampooed for a three weeks.

Hope that helps!
