Product Description Nova has reworked the extremely popular Supernova chuck, and reintroduced it as the Supernova 2. The biggest changes are replacing the keyed pinion with a fixed pinion & Allen key opening/closing mechanism, a closed back, and faster action. Made in New Zealand, Nova chucks consistently provide the best value in high quality wood lathe chucks at very reasonable prices. Check these specifications: - Hard-wearing heavy duty, composite indexing backing plate.
- Captured pinion with rotation arrow. Makes it easier to use the Allen key as it seats easier and faster. Also helps with easy opening and closing.
- Ball nose Allen key with easy grip plastic handle.
- Fully backwards compatible with SuperNova & Nova Chuck Accessories and inserts. This means previous purchases hold their value.
Every chuck comes complete with new display box which has space to display and pack extra accessory jaws, inserts etc. Great for organisation! Faster Action than the original SuperNova. / This package includes the chuck body, 2" jaw set, woodworm screw, T-hex wrench for opening and closing chuck, and insert of your choice. UPON PLACING ORDER, PLEASE EMAIL US (You can access our contact information under "shipping rates & policies" which takes you to "seller help.")WITH THE INSERT SIZE REQUIRED TO FIT YOUR LATHE (Provided at no extra charge). Standard shipping time to most US addresses is 7 - 14 days. Expedited shipping runs about 1/2 these time frames. This item ships from BC Canada, and at this value is not affected by any duties upon import.

Good, but not great December 2, 2008 yankee2 (Pasadena) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had my Supernova2 chuck for about 2 1/2 years, and use it maybe 15 hours a week on the average. I have about 7-8 sets of jaws for it, including the Cole jaws. It has worked fairly well, though the jaw slide travel is shorter than other similar chucks, meaning I need to swap jaws more often than I would with, say, a similar size Oneway or Vicmarc chuck.
My main problem is that after 2 years of service, the pinions, the female part on the chuck that the T-bar hex wrench fits into, have become worn to the point that the wrench now turns in the pinion. This would make the chuck useless, except that a regular allen wrench still works. However, even that is getting loose. It took some effort to find out who to call, but I have ordered the parts, which the person I spoke to estimated at $7.50 each. If that is indeed the price, and I get them in a reasonable amount of time, then OK. No biggie. Now if they are not more difficult to replace than I've been assured, fine. I'm not unhappy.
Slight update: I got thew pinions, at the price I was quoted, but haven't replaced them yet. The problem is that the 1 1/2" snap ring which holds it together requires a bigger ring tool than the one I have. I will eventually find the right tool and repair it. It doesn't seem to be very difficult, if I just make some effort and find the right tool.
BUT, I have to wonder, why do they make the "lock" softer than the "key?" That doesn't make much sense to me. And it doesn't make much sense that the steel is soft enough that this has worn out after what I think is only a moderate amount of use. My usage probably represents tightening this chuck well under 1000 times, by hand. I think it should, and could, wear quite a bit better.
The only positive caveat may be that this is also the least expensive of the popular, medium-size chucks available; I'm just afraid that it's probably the cheapest, too. I'll keep one of these in my tool chest, since I have most of the jaws, but will probably move to another, hopefully better chuck (Vicmarc? Oneway? ARE they better?) at the same time.
The 4 stars (I might have given it a 3 1/2 if I could) is because, despite the little issues, it has worked reasonably well for the time I've had it, at a slightly (considering that the jaws cost about the same as those of the competition) better price than other similar chucks.
Slight update: I have since used the Vicmarc VM120 5" chuck, during a week-long woodturning workshop with Richard Raffin. The Vicmarc is FAR superior to the SN2. Yet, rather than buy that expensive chuck plus a range of new jaws, which could easily run over $1000, I bought another SN2 body for just $169. I should be all set for another couple of years. BTW, I've also learned that the TeknaTool company in Australia, which makes the SN2, INVENTED the scroll chuck, which in my mind does mean something. It has revolutionized modern woodturning, especially bowl turning. Thank you TeknaTool!
Very solid and well engineered, but no CD October 26, 2008 Just Al (FORT COLLINS, CO United States) Unless you own a teknatool lathe, you'll also need to buy a threaded body insert (if one is not included in the package you order). For my JET JWL-1236, I needed the 1" 8 TPI RH (which is apparently very common). I also bought the dovetail chisel, which you don't really need, but it takes the guesswork out of it for this newbie. My only complaint: it was just a bit short on documentation!!! Like, all I got in the box was a 'quick reference guide' that read: "For a complete instruction manual, videos, guides, and other information, please refer to your product CD.' What product CD? The seller was no help, but I was able to find a full product manual online at the manufacturer's WEB site. The full manual discusses the three modes of operation, maintenance, and includes safety guidelines for those modes of operation. (What does a CD cost? A few pennies? I should have docked em a star for omitting it).
Nova makes great chucks December 12, 2007 L. Quaglio 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Not much you can say about Nova chucks except they are great. I own 4 of them and have been using them on my Nova and Delta lathes for more that 5 years. Interchangable jaws abound in my collection. I have never had one second of anything but top performance of these quality accessories.
Great Chuck November 14, 2007 Dusty (wetter washington) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The only down side to the SN2, is that the Titan is a better chuck. Better in that it has a wider range of adjustment then the SN2
The Jaws That Bite May 29, 2006 Marc Ruby™ (Warren, MI USA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
If you are tired of bolting on faceplates and everything that goes along with that, then consider buying a four jaw chuck. This will enable you to work a variety of pieces all for the minimal effort of turning a lip on your piece that the chuck can grab. Much spindle work can be done without even making that effort. It's quite easy to set up - screw in the insert, tighten a hex screw, and then screw the whole assembly onto the lathe. The only complication arises from picking which accessory jaws to buy with it. These are numberless.
It's a bit embarassing to admit that I have two of these - due to a streak of laziness and an occasional excess of cash. the only thing I don't like about this chuck is that changing jaws takes time, and I'm the impatient sort. Keep in mind that no four jaw chuck is any easier to use, I just find it easier to remove one chuck and insert another than to keep fiddling with four seperate jaws. I wish that, rather than an insert that uses the lathe's headstock threads there was an attachment that let you use the morse taper. [There is one available from an aftermarket fabricator and as soon as I get motivated I'll order one and try it out.]
Once you have one of these you are going to wonder how you managed without one. Or two, if you are crazy like me. Teknatool also makes some lighter weight chucks that are perfect for smaller and mini size lathes. Their service is excellent as well.
