Save money, buy a better quality lathe December 21, 2008

I have an earlier design of this lathe. Difference is the bed bars are 1 piece. They have changed the design to allow for smaller packaging by using 2 piece bars now. The low speed on this lathe is way to fast! Unsafe, too fast, except with the smallest of pieces. No matter how accurate you try to get the piece centered they will be out of balance (due to abnormal shapes of rough wood). Thats why it is important to have a low initial speed when first starting. Go to any wood lathe forum and you will find lathes with a low speed 1/2 of this one are complained about being too fast. And this one is even faster! Also 1/2hp is way too low of power for lathe this size capacity. No need for a capacity this big as this lathe is just too lightweight to handle anything even remotely near its maximum listed.
Do a search for wood lathe forums before buying. You will make a better choice in buying.
