24" taping knife simplifies making a very wide skim-coat October 2, 2007

For new drywall installations, this extra-wide taping knife is usually unnecessary. However, it's great for repairing cracks or other defects on flat, finished, ceilings or walls.
Suppose you tape over a crack on a flat ceiling; 1st coat imbeds the tape, 2nd coat widens the joint compound, and the 3rd application is the finish coat. I typically use a 12" or 14" taping knife for drywall work. But, make a 14" wide joint-compound repair on a previously flat surface, and it will noticeably bulge in the middle. To hide such patches, I taper the joint compound further on the 3rd coat with this 24" knife. The bulge is still there, but it tapers out so gradually, it isn't noticeable.
A skilled drywall man may be able to do a wide taper in a single coat, but for the rest of us, it will take a knife like this to do that.
I'm 6/4 and can reach 8' ceilings without using stilts with this 18" handled tool. For 9' ceilings, I'd need a longer handle, ladder, or scaffolding. I've used it with good success on drywalled and plastered rooms.
This tool is so useful for such repairs, it can pay for itself on one job.
