Multitool of choice June 18, 2008 M. Steffens I LOVE multitools, and have had many of them over the years. Three years ago, though, I realized I wasn't actually using any of them. They were all too big, or too bulky, or just didn't do things I needed to use them for on a regular basis. When I found the Shortcut in a store, I knew I'd found the tool for me. It's small enough to put on a keychain (and I used it like that for a year) or slip into a pocket (which I also do regularly now). I also toss it into a fanny pack for day hikes or into my briefcase for GP. It's with me most of the time, and I find I use it two or three times a day, every day. My brother-in-law and nephew were pretty impressed, too, and have since gotten them for themselves and for other guys in their extended family. My favorite, most-used part of the tool is the scissors, which most tools don't have. It's amazing, though, how often I realize I need some: cutting open a box, trimming some paper, whatever. They cut well and hold up well. The other thing I liked is that I didn't have to pull off a fingernail to get the darn tools out, but they stayed in place for use. I used to use Leatherman tools, but the hype drove the price up very quickly. Gerbers are just as good, but a lot less expensive. I might have another Leatherman if someone gives it to me, but I can't see buying anything but Gerbers from here on out. Besides, Leatherman is convinced that everyone needs a pair of needlenose pliers with them all the time, and I just don't.
Better than expected May 1, 2008 troy olson (nashville) If you'd read any of my other reviews you'd know I give a 3 as normal and 4-5 are resevered for items that beat expectations. This is a 4. Works better than I expected. Just feels high quality!
gerber tool January 10, 2008 Dixie Allen 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I already own this multi-tool but ordered it for a gift for someone else. I have loved mine and used it often, especially when traveling. It is very durable and the scissors really work. Also received this product quickly and in good condition.
Multi tool May 7, 2007 R. Findlay (Indiana) Good little functional tool to have on your key chain or short pocket in your jeans. I use it on a fly fishing vest..Great price too!!
spend a few more bucks and get the leatherman micra, its worth it January 24, 2007 J. Schuetz (Minnetonka, MN) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I recently had my Leatherman Micra confiscated at the airport (forgot to put it in my checked luggage and they don't allow such things as carry-on items anymore!), so I headed to target to purchase a replacement Micra as I use it frequently at work. I saw the Gerber shortcut at almost half the price and had heard Gerber made a good multitool, so I gave it a shot. Bad idea! The scissors especially is much weaker and has a lot of trouble cutting through things the micra just tore through. Especially plastic loading straps. The gerber scissors 'bounce' off the loading straps more often than not, and often get dislocated trying to make a cut. Whereas the Leatherman micra could often cut two at a time. This one LOOKS cooler, but does not handle the same workload. Decide what is more important to you.
