2 out of 5 stars Waste Away   October 23, 2009
Gadget Geek (Sunny Arizona)
As most everyone has noted previously, this label machine does waste a LOT of tape. Oddly enough, I really do like this labeler. I like the many options it has and the regular keyboard-style layout. One reviewer ("It doesn't waste tape if you set it up correctly" - Lynn B) noted, you can change the margins to reduce the excess tape. However that's not quite the full story. Reducing the margin only saves tape on one end (instead of 2" of excess tape, you now end up with 1-1/8" of excess tape). If you print multiple labels in one sitting, then the reduced marin is beneficial. If you're like me and print one label at a time - as you need it - then you still end up wasting tape. I recommend you set up for the reduced (narrow) margin, but you'll still end up cutting off an inch of tape. If it wasn't for the wasted tape issue, I'd give this machine 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Good Product, but Wastes Tape   October 3, 2009
Patrick Robinson
As others have mentioned, this model is notorious for wasting tape. I purchased this model on clearance at one of the major office supply store chains, for only about $10. The labels themselves are about $20-25 each. The main complaint I have about this machine is that there could still be enough tape in the cartridge to make the label you need, and then some, but when you try to print, it will print only thick, black bars, indicating it's out of tape. Quite possibly about a foot of tape is wasted due to this defect.

Otherwise, it's a very easy-to-use label maker, prints very professional-looking labels, and like every other Brother model, a must-have for the home or office. I use mine solely for work, and purchased it after having lost another Brother label maker. I purchased a Dymo electronic label maker, and I did not like the way the buttons were set up, nor did I like how the labels turned out. Ended up giving it to a co-worker who already had a Dymo, to use at home or to give to a friend.

4 out of 5 stars So glad I bought this!   October 3, 2009

I read through all the different reviews for electronic labeling systems on Amazon before I purchased this (Martha Stewart had recommended it on her show). Got it at a fantastic price! Yes it does waste a bit of tape but I took one reviewer's suggestion of doing the CHAIN PRINT option and to try printing all my labels at once. And the tape is not expensive when purchased through Amazon. I only paid about ten bucks for mine and it's 26 feet long. I mean, really, I labeled everything in my kitchen (spices, jars, etc) and I still have LOADS of tape left! I would definitely recommend this product.

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm giving a product one star   October 2, 2009

I usually ignore extremely negative (or extremely positive) reviews on Amazon, so it's a bit ironic that I've encountered a product so bad that I'm rating it one star. Unfortunately, the PT-1280 actually warrants it.

The Brother company should not sell the PT-1280, it makes them look terrible. I know that they actually have good products, because my previous label maker (the P-Touch PT-65), which I love, is also made by them. In the following review, I'll compare the PT-1280 to the PT-65 so you can get a sense for just how bad this thing is.

MARGINS: The PT-65 prints reasonable (half-inch) margins around each label. The PT-1280 gives an inch of space on either side, which is a terrible waste. It's also super annoying because it means that one has to have scissors handy to cut the label to size. The PT-1280 does have a "margins" setting, but it is nearly useless. It only adjusts the margin on the right side of the label. The one inch margin on the left actually gets slightly bigger because it now draws a couple dots showing you where to cut the label! Apparently Brother knew that the margins setting was useless because whenever one clears the text for a new label (using the CLEAR button) the margins get reset to "FULL".

LCD SCREEN: The PT-65 has a readable LCD screen. Like a digital watch, it's visible from almost any angle (nearly 180 degrees). The PT-1280, in contrast, has to be viewed straight on (maybe 15 degree viewing angle), which is extremely annoying. The PT-1280 does have the advantage over the PT-65 in that it can show fifteen characters at once, instead of just eight, but it fails when there are too many special symbols in the text. The symbols further away from the cursor show up as a weird glyph which I assume means "this character is not available in the currently loaded font."

PRESETS: The PT-65 has nine handy style presets. For example, I often use preset #5 which will print out my text in bold with a nice rounded frame. The PT-1280 has no (zero, none, nada) presets. Instead they have a clunky "favorites" system which saves text along with the style. You can try to use it like a preset, by using the "OPEN" and "SAVE" menu, but it's clearly not designed to work that way since it requires multiple button presses and erases all the text you've typed. Even worse, since one must scroll past "SAVE" to get to "OPEN", it's very easy when typing quickly to accidentally overwrite a favorite instead of applying it.

QUALITY: The print quality of the PT-65 is sharp and easy to read. The PT-1280, on the other hand, is blocky, at least with the 9mm tape I'm using. The small print is nearly indecipherable.

KEYBOARD: The PT-65 includes individual keys for common punctuation so that they can be typed quickly: apostrophe, double quote, ampersand, comma, and period. The PT-1280 has a larger keyboard, which affords individual number keys that the PT-65 lacks, but it's not well thought out for a label maker. For example, to type an apostrophe (single quote), one must use SHIFT+6. Another example, it has a HUGE "enter" key, even though labels usually don't use it, and when they do, they use it at *most* once.

CODE KEY: The PT-65 has a key labeled "CODE" which, like a shift key, makes the other keys have a second function. Mostly the CODE key is used to insert special characters (digits, symbols), but it is extremely handy for quickly adjusting the size, style, and frame of the text. The PT-1280 has no CODE key, instead it has actual keys for the digits, which then can be shifted to make the most frequent symbols. This would be an advantage, but the lack of dedicated formatting buttons ruins it. Using the PT-1280 one has to scroll through a hierarchical menu to first select the attribute you want to change (size, style, frame, etc) before it can be changed.

SPECIAL SYMBOLS: The PT-65 has a nice bonus set of symbols including pointing hands, no smoking, handle with care, fragile, inflammable, a jack-o-lantern, Santa, a football, and a heart. The PT-1280 has fewer symbols available and the ones that are there are less useful to me. It lacks all of the ones mentioned above, but does include the electrical symbols for Ground, AC, DC, Power, micro, Ohm, and electric shock hazard.

SYMBOL INPUT: The PT-1280 interface makes symbols harder to use. On the PT-65, once one knows which screen of symbols contains the one they want, one can skip directly to it by pressing a letter after hitting the "Symbol" key. On the PT-1280, one must scroll through the menus by repeatedly hitting the Symbol key. (And, if you miss the menu you want, you have to scroll all the way around because there's no back button.)

ACCENTS: Okay, it took some searching, but I found something that the PT-1280 does better than PT-65. The PT-1280 has more accented characters from foreign languages available and it makes them easier to type. Simply type the letter and then repeatedly press the "Accent" key until the variation you want shows up. I'll end on this positive note so that my review isn't a complete rant.
