Normal everyday use is likely to expose the user to harmful dust and microscopic particles containing lead and other chemicals November 14, 2009 Reader I was quite pleased with the light produced by this flashlight, both its intensity and its broad field of coverage. The red and black belt-strap case makes it easy to carry and quickly accessible when needed. As I only needed to use its for less than an hour at a time, I can't comment on its capabilities for extended continuous use.
However, the "Warning" on the rear of the package states, "Normal everyday use of this product is likely to expose the user to dust and microscopic particles containing lead and other chemicals known in the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm. Always wear the appropriate clothing and safety equipment when operating this product. Wash hand[sic] thoroughly after use and handling of this product." The title of the review is a short paraphrase of that warning.
Clearly, in today's litigious society many companies observe considerable, some might say excessive, caution in protecting themselves from potential lawsuits. Thus, the selection (or not) of this product may depend on one's belief in the validity of warning labels.
Perhaps the manufacturer felt that cost benefit of using somewhat greater care in the selection of materials and the means of production was not a appropriate trade-off if manufacturing costs would increase. In my case, as I was able to identify almost similarly capable flashlights without this warning I now use another led flashlight, one without the potential health risks. With recent revelations about the safety of some Chinese-made products I chose to accept the caution on the warning label. However, others with less concern about possible health risks may well opt for this unit based on its capabilities.
It clearly deserves five stars for functionality, based on the unit I received, and at least for continued use of less than an hour at a time, but its was down-rated owing to its potential health risks. Hopefully, in the future Neiko will be able to make this product without using lead and other potentially carcinogenic additives.
Didn't work right out of the box! October 8, 2009 P. Rutan (San Diego, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered this flashlight because it had so many good reviews. BIG mistake on my part. It arrived today and I just opened it and put batteries in it and guess what, it's useless. A firefly lights up a bigger area than this thing does. It is so dim that I had to go into a pitch black room to tell that it was even on. A complete waste of money. I wish I could have seen the packaging before I ordered it. Bad English is usually a dead giveaway that the item is an inferior product.
Hot stuff from a cool little light! September 11, 2009 Jeanie Riddell (La Canada, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We evacuated during the recent fire in the mountains above Los Angeles. My oldest son came over to retrieve stuff from the garage that he and his brothers still have stored at my house. The garage light is burned out; I handed him this flashlight and he gave me a look like "Uh - Mom - this little thing isn't going to be real helpful . . ." - but when he turned it on, he was amazed! It illuminated a wide area with a bright-white light, which enabled him to find the yearbooks and old baseball cards tucked way in the back corners with NO problem. (This one was a gift from another son; they'll all be getting them for Christmas!)
Cheap price and a cheap light August 19, 2009 Jeff (Chicago, IL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The light turned on, thats why I give it 2 stars instead of 1. Other than that it's a joke. It is NOT powered by 28 led lights, rather the cover, where the light comes out of, is designed with 28 holes, so light may pass through. This is nothing more than a gimmick, made to be visually appealing and interesting ONLY. Because of this useless cover and lens, this light has absolutely NO throw. Meaning, the light beam doesn't travel over 6-8ft (and i'm being generous) in front of you. This is strictly a cheap flood light, good for a car, hallway, small room, tiny garage, or lighting a small amount of distance in front of you. I would hardly say its pocket sized, it is short, but the head is rather large, meaning it'll be jabbing you if you do put it in a pocket. The casing could take a few dings, but I doubt the light could survive more than a drop or two. The battery holder inside rattles in mine, and the light dims and brightens without warning - not reliable. As others have stated, the battery contacts corrode easily, and this also greatly affects light output. This thing takes three AAA's?! With the light it actually gives out, you would think maybe one AAA is powering this thing. In short, a good cheapie if under $10, use it around the house - but don't rely on it for anything else or for anything remotely important.
