Battery problems - solved by using adapter or lithium batteries October 27, 2009 Adrenaline (Huntington Beach, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The labeler works fine. The problem is that batteries need to be at max (by alkaline standards) and, when the alkalines degrade even the slightest amount, the labeler believes the voltage is too low and the unit shuts down. The solution is to use lithium batteries which are 1.7v at full charge instead of alkaline (which are about 1.5v at full charge). Unit works fine with lithium batteries. Alternatively, the unit can use an AC adapter. The Brother adapter is a little pricey. I found the labeler works fine with any generic AC to 9vDC adapter with at least a 1A (1000mA) rating (and of course which has the proper plug). The polarity is unusual (negative tip), so be aware of that when selecting an adapter.
Wastful Product October 19, 2009 Mom of boys (Winston Salem, NC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have used label makers for years. I got the Brother P-touch PT-1010 to replace an older P-touch that stopped working. What a disappointment! This one is so much more complicated to use than my old one and the labels print out with an inch of wasted tape even when the margins are set to the most narrow setting possible. The ABC order keyboard also makes typing slow. The function keys are completely confusing and even after owning this machine for 6 months I still have to check the function key sticker on the back of the machine to make simple changes to my labels. My old P-touch PT-85 had NONE of these problems(QWERTY keyboard feature, no wasted space at ends of each label, easy to use function keys), so I know Brother has the technology to make their label makers more user friendly. Plus the tape for my old one costs a fraction of the price of the tape for the new one. I held on to my my old label maker so now I'm actually looking for a way to get it fixed so I can use it again. Brother, shame on you for creating such a wasteful and user UN-friendly product.
Brother PT-1010 handheld labeler October 8, 2009 J. Sobelman (Three Rivers, CA USA) The labeler works OK. It would be to its advantage to have instruction printed in readable print, not in minuscule letters. The instructions should be simplified to be user friendly. The unit itself does what it is supposed to do, thus the performance is satisfactory.
Increadible waste of tape! September 23, 2009 globetrotter (New Jersey) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you buy the PT-1010, you will also need a pair of scissors to cut the excess wasted tape. I am very disappointed with this item, it waste about 6 cm (2 Inches) of tape with each and every print. With the added insult of the extra work because now you will have to cut the tape with scissors to fit. And there is no way to adjust. I would not recommend to buy this this labeler. The PT-900 has the same design flaw, P-touch realy got greety with this one.
Fairly intuitive August 2, 2009 Beth Stein (Los Angeles, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like everyone is saying, the main drawback is that it leaves too much blank tape on either side of a label; so the best solution for that is to do more than one label at a time, where possible, and just cut by hand, to waste less tape. Tape is expensive, unfortunately, so you do want to conserve.
Other than that, I found it relatively simple to use, fairly intuitive. I have not needed the adaptor cable so far, I just try to remember to turn it off when I'm not going to use it for a couple of minutes, and besides, it turns itself off after a few minutes of disuse. So far I am still running on the original batteries I installed. It's easy to carry around, so the portability is another plus.
I don't know how it will hold up for the long haul, but so far, I'm liking it pretty well!
