TRIED TO PLACE ON A AIR VENT AND THE COVER KEPT FALLING OFF. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

It is too short. The height fits perfectly well on my vents, but the width hardly covers it. Besides, the magnet is not too strong, so I had to put 8 strong thick magnets to keep it in place. After doing this, it really makes a difference with the cooling efficiency, but the total cost is much higher and I had to paint everything with the color of my walls, otherwise it looks very ugly.

We have used them successfully on ceiling registers in an area with strong airflow. As long as you close the register and make sure the cover is trimmed to fit, they stick very well. They can easily be trimmed with scissors or a utility knife to fit the register closely.
But you cannot simply slap on a whole sheet on top of a register and expect it to work. The illustration Amazon shows is very misleading in this respect. If you are not prepared to trim them, don't buy them.
One problem can be registers that have a lot of paint buildup. And of course they only work on steel registers.
If covering the supply registers doesn't cut airflow enough, try covering the returns as well.

The three came in a box as opposed to an envelope so the about 1" on the long edge is curled and won't lay flat even when placed on a metalic surface. So when I put them on the vent there was not enough magnetic surface in contact with the vent to adhere and so I had to improvise. Junk. No idea how I am going to flaten them out.

I have an odd-sized vent and had trouble finding a permanent vent cover that opens and closes. The magnetic vent cover fits perfectly and does a great job of keeping air from coming out of the vent. It's perfect for my needs.
