Good for me. November 19, 2009 J. B. Wasack (NYC area) This unit works good for what I need it for. We are still using older non-HD TVs in our home and this unit works great with the component cables. I simply put my media files on a USB stick plug it into the unit and then watch on my tube TV.
The unit is quite small which is great if you need to bring it somewhere or take it on the road.
The only real issue I have with the unit is that the USB devices do not power down when the unit is turned off. IF you are using an external HD, this might cause a bigger issue, but since I use a USB stick, it is not a big issue for me.
I am happy with my purchase.
No more hardware to reproduce pictures !!! November 17, 2009 Humberto Lopez Aguilar (Mexico) This is the future... i love that. Just some problems to reproduce avi files because sound has 2-3 seconds of delay from image.
Great product but... November 17, 2009 Andrew L. Rudacille (Ft. Benning) Honestly, if you are going to push a product like this out it has to be DTS compatible, and this is not. That is a big downfall for me. It also has problems playing high bitrate AC3 files...the screen goes green and breaks up. Tried two different ones just to make sure it wasn't mine and it did it on both.
Western Digital told me in an email that they have no plans for DTS because of licensing issues. So, if you need DTS support then stay away from this.
Almost unusable user interface November 17, 2009 Charles Platt (Arizona, USA) For incomprehensible reasons, this player fills the screen with identical icons representing files on a hard drive, but only reveals the filename corresponding with each icon when you highlight the icon. You have to play hide-and-seek to find what you want. Why not show A LIST of filenames? Oh, that would be so much more boring, wouldn't it.
In addition the startup routine is extremely laborious. Search for the media type that you're looking for, then scroll another set of icons to get a folder view, then open, open, and open--why not just show a listing? WHY NOT? Microsoft figured out how to do this in Windows 3.1, but WD for some reason thinks it has a better idea.
If you can deal with the frustration of the user interface, this player works. That's about all I can say for it. I'd send it back for a refund if I thought there was a better alternative. But the Asus media player doesn't even allow you to scan forward through an MP3 faster than x2 speed (x3 speed crashes it), and it has its own style of brain-dead user interface.
Okay - But some UI issues... November 16, 2009 M. Hoffman (USA) Quick review:
- Took 20 minutes to recognize my external (WD 1Tb), I'm guessing because it was big. So whenever I unplug it to update media files, it takes an additional 20 minutes to load... kind of silly. *note: loads 16gb USB fast...
- No power button on console, only on remote (which is small and hides frequently).
- Cannot play some of the audio codecs for some files (I don't remember which ones off the top of my head). Plays all my movies well, but some TV episodes lack audio.
- On the plus side, the menu organization is intuitive and nice.
overall = meh.
