The PaintEater powerfully removes paint, then gently smooths the underlying surface to prepare it for a fresh coat.
Quickly and Easily Prep Your Home's Exterior
Painting a home's exterior is a big project, but one that pays off in curb appeal as well as protection for your home. The first and most tedious step in painting your home is to get rid of loose or flaking paint and to prepare a smooth surface for a fresh coat. The PaintEater is an award-winning tool from Wagner Spray Tech and 3M that will help make quick work of this process.

The Wagner PaintEater was awarded the Handyman Club of America's Member Tested and Recommended Seal and Contractor Tested and Recommended Seal.

Aggressive on Paint, Gentle on Siding and Trim
The Wagner PaintEater aggressively removes paint but is easy on underlying substrate. With the PaintEater you can prepare most outdoor surfaces, including wood and masonite siding, concrete, and steel. The machine's powerful, 3.2-amp motor delivers 2,600 RPM for removing even the most stubborn pain, paint oxides, and mildew; this optimal rotary speed gives just the right combination of performance and control.

Flex-Disc System for Precise Results
The PaintEater combines a high-powered machine and a tough 3M spun-fiber disc with high-performance abrasive embedded into the fibers. Together they provide you with speed, power, performance, and control, so you don't have to worry about damaging surfaces.

The PaintEater's innovative Flex-Disc System allows the disc to conform to surfaces for precise results around flat trim and siding. The disc can be operated on its edge--to remove stubborn paint chips--or flat--to smooth or feather edges. The outer edge of the disc is ideal for preparing the surface underneath lap siding. The disc's compact size--4-1/2 inches--allows you to access tight corners; its open-web design minimizes buildup of paint and dust and allows the disc to easily glide over screws, nails, or sharp edges without damage.

Removing the disc is just as simple as using it--no tools required. Simply engage the arbor lock and unscrew.

Ergonomic Design Provides Comfort and Safety
The PaintEater is ergonomically designed to allow for multiple hand positions and to ease hand fatigue. It can safely be used with either the right hand or left hand, and the retractable handle and soft-grip cover allow you to easily switch between one-handed and two-handed operation. And even with its rugged, glass-filled polypropylene body, the PaintEater is lightweight enough for you to carry from job to job.

A shroud design at the base of the unit ensures that your hands stay safely away from the disc during operation. For added protection, the PaintEater features a Velcro strap for securing the tool safely to your hand when working on a ladder, rooftop, or when you just need extra leverage. For peace of mind, a silicon boot protects the on/off switch from dust and moisture.

The Wagner PaintEater is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

4 out of 5 stars The Happy Stripper   November 2, 2009
Rene Caron (Montreal, QC CANADA)
I own an 1890s Victorian brick house. The tongue and groove ceiling of the front porch had not been stripped or painted in decades. I dreaded stripping off the flaky ceiling paint. Because the old paint was probably filled with lead I purchased an industrial quality mask with air filters and went to work. It took me a few minutes to get the hang of the PaintEater. At first it quickly ran away from me. I learned to let the stripper do it's work and not to add pressure to it. It took several passes but I was able to finish the job in half a day. I did have to go over the grooves with a hand tool to get that paint out. This tool does an excellent job bringing the paint down to wood. It will not get all the paint off, but what paint is left could only be removed with a heat gun. Scraping with hand tools is a tedious and slow job and the results are poor. I had none of the breakdown problems other people here have mentioned. In my experience with old homes, it is essential to get as much paint off as possible if you want your new paint job to hold. This tools does that job well. I would recommend this tool.

3 out of 5 stars Better than anything else   October 25, 2009
Scott G. Newman (Stone Mountain, Georgia United States)
This does remove paint much better than anything I've used yet. It's a big quirky to hold and use, but it's definitely better than using a sander.

3 out of 5 stars WORKS VERY GOOD ON FLAT SURFACE, NOT LOGS!   September 20, 2009

WE HAD PLANNED & SAVED & RESEARCHED OUR REFINISHING PROJECT FOR OUR LITTLE 800SQ FT LOG HOME HERE IN EUREKA, MONTANA. THE BEST FOLKS TO DO BUSINESS WITH WHEN REFINISHING A LOG HOME OR CEDAR HOME, OR CAULKING FOR A REGULAR HOME ARE SASCHO PRODUCTS BRIGHTON COLORADO [...] 1-800-767-5656. Their products are far superior to any on the market & work, and are guranteed. Without their help our project wouldn't have taken place. We are seniors & had the "B_ _ _" make believe finish on our house /plus a friends cedar home. Had to get it off quick, EPA just contacted us yesterday and told us to wait b/4 going any further with the removal. Be glad to provide EPA email. Needed machine, could not afford "corn blasting" to remove finish. Looked at expensive brushes, $[...]/4", 499.00 Ma_ _ _ _" machine. Found Wagner Paint Eater, read reviews, contacted the company, they said it would work on our log home. It does great on the flat part, not so good on the round part. Had to go back to old heavy angle grinder. Pads hold up well, cost is right, little slow & delicate for big jobs, need to build commercial model.Runnig at 10 or 11m rpm pads are not rated for this speed, don't try it! Would be great on beveled siding or clapboard. Might keep it do a lot of wood work. Have 285 bd ft of fine "Barn Wood Flooring" to do something with, sell it or build it! Very light compared to angle grinder, works real good on concrete. Maybe I'll start shaving with it, probably work darn good there too! See ya! BRS Eureka MT

2 out of 5 stars Over promises. Under delivers   August 27, 2009

I have been using the Paint Eater on wood trim that is on a house built in the 1920's. The existing paint is in very poor condition and the earlier coats of paint from many years ago are brittle and, I assume, lead based. The Paint Eater does an adequate job softening the edges of the cavities once the paint has been removed by the traditional scraping method. But as a tool that actually removes the paint, it doesn't deliver; I have had to revert to scraping by hand.

Moreover, the pad does wear down quickly, as other reviewers have mentioned. Given the fairly high cost of the machine and, especially, the pad, I wonder if a pad sander with coarse paper used to "ease" the edges of the craters wouldn't be just as effective at lower cost.

I also agree with other reviewers who have commented that one really has to keep control of the Eater or it will dance all over the place.

My final thought is that it is over rated and a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Labor saving wonder!   June 26, 2009

I love this! I have to paint my house this Summer and have a LOT of loose paint that has to come off! If I used an old-fashioned paint scraper, I'd be at it for years and need the muscles of an Iron Man! With this, I can do it myself and I won't be at it forever. I love it!
